HDMI Audio lost after update

Hi all, first post here, I’ve gotten my system into a pretty good state, but a recent update just broke sound. Normally my sound is routed to my monitor over my DisplayPort connection, it would show up as “AMD Ellesmere HDMI Audio [Radeon RX 470/480 / 570/580/590]” before.

I’m using manjaro-pipewire on my system, have tried to use pulseaudio but GNOME/GDM fails to function so I have to stay with pipewire unless there’s some fix for pulseaudio. I followed the exact instructions on switching from Pipewire to Pulseaudio and it now successfully boots through GDM. Before attempting fixes, I was getting Dummy Output from pulseaudio - after failing to fix and switched to pipewire, I now have Family 17h (Models 00h-0fh) HD Audio Controller, which seems to be piping to Digital S/PDIF out. If I connect my headphones to front-side bus, it detects and switches, but disconnecting gives no audio to monitor. I have no audio connections to rear I/O either, it should all be piping through DisplayPort.

Added my inxi to help. I’ve attempted to downgrade alsa pkgs to 1.2.5 versions per some suggestions (potential regression) but to no avail.

My sound is also broken since a recent update (most likely December 16) on my Dell Precision 5750 Laptop with comet lake sound. All my HDMI outputs were gone, laptop speakers do not work and only the headphones socket works.

I downgraded pulseaudio-alsa (1:1.2.6-1 → 1:1.2.5-2) which brought the HDMI outputs back to pulse audio, but no sound. I also tried to downgrade the different alsa packages but without success.

This is my final downgrade list:

[2021-12-19T09:10:48+0100] [ALPM] downgraded lib32-alsa-plugins (1.2.6-1 -> 1.2.5-1)
[2021-12-19T09:10:48+0100] [ALPM] downgraded alsa-plugins (1:1.2.6-1 -> 1:1.2.5-2)
[2021-12-19T09:10:48+0100] [ALPM] downgraded alsa-ucm-conf (1.2.6.3-0 -> 1.2.5-1)
[2021-12-19T09:04:53+0100] [ALPM] downgraded lib32-alsa-lib (1.2.6.1-1 -> 1.2.5-2)
[2021-12-19T09:04:53+0100] [ALPM] downgraded alsa-lib (1.2.6.1-1 -> 1.2.5-2)
[2021-12-19T09:01:04+0100] [ALPM] downgraded alsa-utils (1.2.6-1 -> 1.2.5-3)
[2021-12-19T08:31:39+0100] [ALPM] downgraded pulseaudio-alsa (1:1.2.6-1 -> 1:1.2.5-2)

Same problem. Dell xps 9700 lost sound after recent update. Had to use timeshift to fully restore the system. Applied update (most likely December 16) again with deselected:

lib32-alsa-plugins
alsa-plugins
alsa-ucm-conf
lib32-alsa-lib
alsa-lib
alsa-utils
pulseaudio-alsa

The above packages left on 1.2.5 version and sound back on again.

Apologies for the bump (I’m aware of the forum rules) but this is a status update.
Since originally posting this, I have been trying to solve the issue. I followed the guides to PROPERLY remove Pipewire and replace it with Pulseaudio, so at least one piece of the puzzle is replaced. I’ve added inxi and alsa-tool info to the OP, and have deduced that the Family 17h HD Audio Controller is the on-board audio of the motherboard. The exotic thing is that snd-hda-intel isn’t using the GPU audio anymore.

Looking at alsa-tool for my configuration

The GPU is showing, but it’s not being implemented for audio output. I’m honestly not sure what changed with updates to either ALSA or Pulseaudio to cause this. I have to assume that’s what it is, everything worked fine until I updated.

Checking pacmd list-cards only provides the “HD-Audio Generic” with only on-board connections. ALSA is the kernel component for devices, so I assume Pulseaudio is just gathering its info from ALSA, and if ALSA isn’t using my GPU audio, naturally, it won’t offer it to PA. This makes the troubleshooting on only having S/PDIF outputs pointless, as trying to set-card-profile fails if using the PCI mapping associated to the GPU audio controller (0000:09:00.1 in my case).

Removing ~/.config/pulse and relogging grants me a bootup with no pulseaudio server running. From there, I’ve tried alsactl init, but it seems it’s just doing the same nonsense.

alsa-lib parser.c:243:(error_node) UCM is not supported for this HDA model (HD-Audio Generic at 0xf7900000 irq 74)
alsa-lib main.c:1412:(snd_use_case_mgr_open) error: failed to import hw:1 use case configuration -6
Found hardware: “HDA-Intel” “Realtek ALC1220” “HDA:10ec1220,1458a0c3,00100101” “0x1458” “0xa0c3”
Hardware is initialized using a generic method

Out of sheer stubbornness, I finally rebooted, entered BIOS, and manually disabled the on-board audio controller. Running alsactl init this time results in… nothing. No prompt, no information. I tried one more thing, to modprobe alsa-base.conf, and add “option snd-hda-intel pci=1002:aaf0” to the file, but still nothing from alsactl.

I’m at a point where I can only assume that, like my T600 used for a VM, the audio controller is no longer working in my installation, or that ALSA just doesn’t want to see it.

I’m getting desperate, so I’m posting a journalctl -r | grep snd to see if it will give any clues as to what’s going on. I would really rather not re-install my entire Manjaro installation, it took me days to get my VM and IOMMU all sorted out for smooth performance, I don’t want to be set back like that.

This message showing an incorrect audio option is repeated many times in journal

Dec 20 12:56:41 stratos kernel: snd_hda_intel 0000:09:00.1: dmic_detect option is deprecated, pass snd-intel-dspcfg.dsp_driver=1 option instead

ALSA options for dmic_detect or snd-intel-dspcfg.dsp_driver=1 may be needed on some laptops for digital microphones, but not needed for desktop motherboard
this option could be a problem for HDMI digital output without affecting analog outputs

The dmic_detect option is not shown as a boot option in inxi so has probably been added as a system configuration file

Please post response to

grep dmic /etc/modprobe.d/*.conf

I believe at some point, I removed the option because it didn’t appear to do anything, and by result, I deleted alsa.conf. Using that command yields nothing.

LSing modprobe.d gives me 3 files, kvm.conf, snd-hda-intel.conf, and vfio.conf. snd-hda-intel.conf only has

options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

In order to stabilize audio in the VM.

Here’s a link to the full verbose journalctl for my current bootup if it will help. Let me know if I should grep for something more specific.

Trying another time, and it seems that PulseAudio and Pipewire have no significance at this point. I’ve made the switch to Pipewire once again, and the audio is still working through the Realtek hardware, so this is something wrong with my configuration and detecting the HDMI audio.

Other changes:

  • added option snd-hda-intel snd-intel-dspcfg.dsp_driver=1 to /etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel.conf ; no effect
  • reinstalled all components relating to ALSA, PulseAudio, and PipeWire where applicable using sudo pacman -S including sof-firmware and alsa-card-profiles and updated to latest versions in stable branch
  • used alsactl init ad nauseum
  • switched between x11 and wayland just to narrow down the remote possibility

At this point, I’m reaching the end of my rope. I’m just baffled at what changed in the configuration and how those changes have become a new default that can’t be recovered from. It works in the live environment, and it worked up until I did the updates 10 days ago. No combinations of downgrades, upgrades, reinstalls, reconfigs, etc, have gotten me any closer to fixing this issue.

I’m posting a final bout of logs.
