HDD not being detected

Hi, there!
I have a 1TB Western Digital HDD which is not being detected in BIOS. Besides, I can hear a clicking sound, which is bad. The hard disk has one year only and no damage by falling or something. I checked the purchase date and alas is outdated, so no warranty applicable. Is it still possible to repair it or some way to check its health?

-Alex.

I’m afraid there’s nothing you can do — the drive is dead. :man_shrugging:

Suddenly the clicking sound stopped and now it’s being detected again!!!
How can I check its health or repair any damages?

lsblk --fs
sudo smartctl -x /dev/sdXY

Mechanical errors cannot be repaired. Backup your data on a second disk as long as you have access.

But I think HDD mechanic can be repaired by data recovery specialist, unlike SSD
You will get data back when whole magnets are not damaged.

  • cable
  • Head stack with an actuator
  • Spindel

They are possibly repairable.

The values are pretty normal, so seems no mechanical error. What makes me think is this:

199 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count -O--CK 200 196 000 - 125

What leads me to the conclusion that there is problem with the cable. Loose contact, dust or bad cable. Try to exchange it.

Yes… sorry. I should have been more precise… Mechanical errors cannot be repaired without special knowledge and tools. But yeah you are right.

If it’s a cable problem only, that would be cool. Data or power cable? Which one should I change?

Normally it is the data cable, since the HDD tries spin up on power up right?

Yes, it was trying to spin up when the clicking issue was happening. So, if I replace the data cable, the 199 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count result should change?

No, the raw value will stay and errors as well. But it should not produce more errors. But it is just a guess. Practice will show if I am right.

I’ll replace the cable, I’ll run the test again and see what happens.

After replacment, do also a smart self-test. There is also a gui available:

pamac install gsmartcontrol
sudo gsmartcontrol

Do there a “Short Self-test” and if that is ok, do a “Extended Self-Test”. But that can take time.

Even when the short self-test was completed without error, why the error log shows some ATA error count?

That is a log and you see when it happend at “lifetime hours”. If command is aborted than it is mostly like a loose contact. I had something like that recently. Heat or dust can lead to a loose contact for example.

As I know the self-test, does not test the connection, but rather the disk itself.

Thanks for your response. As of now, the disk is working fine, so it seems the problem was in fact related to a loosen cable. I’ll do the Extended self-test.

happy that @megavolt could help with all his wise experience  it would be very nice if you’re closing a thread if it is solved in future and give credits to whom deserve it. i marked it as solved and gave credit to the mighty megavolt. i hope this is in your mind, if not you can change it.

Sure, I agree with your resolution. :grinning: :+1:
