Having updated, GRUB menu now appears at boot with a five second timer and duplicate entries

Having updated, I notice that when I boot up the machine the Grub menu now appears at boot with five second timer. How do I change it back so that at boot the menu is bypassed unless I interrupt by holding down the shift key?

UPDATE: Oh, and I also notice that I have some duplicate Grub entries now.

I have no why these entries suddenly appeared. Would that explain the sudden timer issue? Any help would be appreciated!

The grub settings are in /etc/default/grub.

# Set to 'countdown' or 'menu' to change timeout behavior,
# press ESC key to display menu.
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden

Please don’t forget to update the grub configuration after changes made:
sudo update-grub

I’d change this, but that’s what is already set in /etc/default/grub

I did do a sudo update-grub and rebooted to be sure.

Any other ideas? It seems very very strange that this GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden seems to be ignored right now.

It is if you have more than manjaro installed (dual-boot, etc).
This has been the case for a long time.

I’m guessing that whatever problem you have with multiple entries is causing them to be recognized as multiple operating systems and thus the forced menu.

It appears this may have something to do with your encryption setup as the ‘second’ manjaro is a a luks path.

I’ve used the same setup for a few years now, and this only cropped up after the most recent Manjaro update. I have only one OS on this machine.

Did you not read the whole thing?

Yes I read that. What process manages that for grub? Is it os-prober? I only have two partitions on my drive, a EFI boot partition, and an encrypted btrfs partition which contains Manjaro and my data.

A few other people seem to have had this problem after a recent update. The only thing that seems to be a consistent factor is the use of BTRFS as the file system.

Here is my inxi report:

It’s not such a good idea to attach your issue to another one
which has been marked as solved in the meantime, too.

Better to create your own thread with your own description of your own problem.

I was just coming back here to do that. Didn’t mean to hijack the thread. Thank you.

Not a problem.
It was just meant as a reminder.

This is unrelated, but we suggest to provide swap.

Did you ever roolback with timeshift ?

Please describe your problem as precisely as possible. It may not be the same reason as in the other threads.

Re

I have 32gb of ram and have never had a problem, but will take under advisement.

To the best of my knowledge, I’ve never restored a timeshift snapshot.

Prior to the 2025-02-04 update, I was able to do the following:

  1. Power on the computer
  2. Enter my LUKS encryption password
  3. Watch the machine boot and then log in.

After the 2025-02-04 update, the grub menu now appears with a five second timer. This, even though my /etc/default/grub.cfg has

GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden

And now I have the following menu items:

The second entry with the luks identifier was not there before.

There was one more thing which happened during my the 2025-0204 update, I noticed that an error was generated (no idea if this is related to the grub issue at all)

[2025-02-06T13:51:18-0600] [ALPM] running '30-systemd-daemon-reload-user.hook'...
[2025-02-06T13:52:48-0600] [ALPM-SCRIPTLET] Job for user@1000.service failed because the control process exited with error code.
[2025-02-06T13:52:48-0600] [ALPM-SCRIPTLET] See "systemctl status user@1000.service" and "journalctl -xeu user@1000.service" for details.

I executed the suggested journalctl command and got this;

I’d like to to the latest update to 2025-02-16, but I’m kind paranoid given these errors.

Bear in mind that the latest update might actually fix the issue?

You could always change the timer in /etc/default/grub

GRUB_DEFAULT=saved
GRUB_TIMEOUT=5
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR='Manjaro'
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="resume=UUID=1f0a6d4b-4dcd-491e-8a2b-b1769e2dc706"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

or un-comment the two entries:

# Uncomment to enable Hidden Menu, and optionally hide the timeout count
#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=5
#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true

There was this other thread that is essentially the same.

As mentioned here already that the menu is forced because of the extra entries …

This other thread found the reason for them

I have never restored a snapshot before, but I tried that solution anyway and it did not work.

Did you find a solution for GRUB?
It looks like no solution has been found for many days.

I had switched from GRUB to Limine to get better BTRFS support with LUKS2 and to fix all GRUB related issues. So far I have no problems.

Manjaro forces you to use LUKS1 because of GRUB.

Recently, I figured out that I wasn’t running on the latest 6.12 LTS kernel. I usually have the latest two LTS kernals available. I had 6.1 and 6.6 installed. I added the 6.12 LTS kernal and rebooted. Same issue with the grub menu appearing with the additional entries.

BUT then I removed the 6.1 LTS kernal (leaving me with 6.12 LTS and 6.6 LTS). I rebooted again. No grub menu appeared! I rebooted once more and escaped to the grub menu and, lo, the additional entries were gone and all is as it was before.

It seems that the removel of the 6.1 LTS kernal somehow fixed this problem. Would love to know what happened!
