Hardrive partition wont unmount to resize. How do I gain rw permissions away from root

I did not know what subforum to use for this topic but a quick search of partitioning made me believe this one would serve well. I am not having problems with installation, Manjaro is already installed on my hardware but a hard drive that is read only and had my old files is ready to be resized and wiped clean so I can use it for storage, but it will not let me unmount it and I tried to give myself permissions over it but that failed too.

KDE partition manager says this

The file system on partition ‘/dev/sda2’ could not be unmounted.
>Details
Command: umount --verbose --all-targets /dev/sda2

And when I tried to change permissions i was trying.

chown username:username /run/media/blah/blah

but it came back and said it was a read only file system which thats exactly what i was trying to change.
the above command worked on the first partition i tried it on but also the unmounting issue did not happen to the first one just the second one.

chown: changing ownership of '/run/media/bodom/OS': Read-only file system

My goal is two fold, resize and clear out that hard drive as its purpose of bringing over my old files is done. And give myself rw permission on the drive after I’m done.
I cant seem to get any closer to the answer at this point and would really appreciate one of you guys’ help.

Thank you for looking over this topic if you found it.

/dev/sda2 is your root partition, on which Manjaro is installed. Of course you can’t unmount it from within Manjaro.

Hmmm That is a very intriguing point. At first I was going to comment that you must be mistaken because I thought I installed it differently but now that I read what you say and look again. You must be right. So how do I gain write permission to sda2 so I can put files there?

Simply put I didnt know what I was talking about.

I thought one thing was another thing and thats how I got confused.

You have permission to put files in the /home/[your user name] directory on /dev/sda2. That is where you should be placing your files.

on the resizing front, you best bet would be boot into manjaro-live media and do it. (regulation precautions such as backing up whole partiton is advised)
