Harddrives and Network Device Disconnecting from OS

I recently bought a new mainboard (ASRock B650E Taichi Lite) and CPU (amd ryzen 9 7950X3D) and since then I experience that my SATA drives are disconnecting occasionally while running my system (~5min-60min). Also sometimes my LAN connection is not working anymore, especially when used with VPN. Before the replacement of the hardware everything worked without issue.

I see the following logs, when a hard drive is suddenly disconnecting

Have you an 860 or 870 Samsung SSD Drive?

This is concerning 4 different hard drives, where 2 of them are SSDs and the other 2 are classical HDDs. None of these are Samsung SSD drives.

Then that should be your first clue.

  • Check all connectors, and especially so the power supply.

  • Check that your processor is properly seated, that the heat sink is properly attached, with a proper application of thermal paste — not too much, not too little, and properly spread.

  • Check that your system is getting adequate cooling — the fans are working and there is adequate airflow.

This I already checked. Everything is seated nicely, thermals are fine (40-60°C) and there is only little chance that all 4 of the sata connectors are having issues at the same time. On top of that sometimes I lose my LAN aswell, so there must be another issue.

EDIT:

I think I also notice that this especially happens when the drives and LAN are under load

Could be a faulty motherboard then. I presume that the Ethernet connector will be on the motherboard itself, and your SATA connector will be as well.

Just in case you have any doubts about the possibility that your motherboard is the cause, I’ve had a similar thing happening to a motherboard too once, and that was a shop-built computer. The machine was still under warranty, so they installed a new motherboard — and a new HDD, because it was dead too — and the problems were gone.

I’ve also had tons of problems with a couple of other motherboards. Quality control isn’t anymore what it used to be. :man_shrugging:

Addendum: It could also be the power supply not providing enough juice anymore, but considering that you mention problems with the network connection as well, I suspect the motherboard.

I remember the WRITE FPDMA QUEUED error in 8x0 Samsung drives due to a faulty firmware, but as none of yours are Samsung obviously this can’t be the cause.

I see lots of log errors involving /dev/sdc. Is it possible to disconnect that disk and work for a while to see if it is the cause?

And be sure you have the latest bios available to be sure all the known bugs have been corrected:

also check that the bios does really support your cpu.

and please post the output of the mandatory

inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width

that can show possible missing modules /hardware support

It 100% does and i have loads of overhead with my PSU

I will try that, I suspect maybe it is an issue with too many PCI-E lanes occupied

have you tried to release the cpu-leaver, unplug and replug the cpu ? sometimes contact-problems can cause this behaviour.

Consider upgrading your BIOS to v3.02 (released 2024-05-17).

This BIOS specifically updates AGESA 1.1.7.0 for Ryzen processor support.

Try a newer kernel. 6.6 LTS at least.

I did already quite a few of these, but I just installed v3.02. Running strong atm, I hope this will resolve the problem, otherwise I will try a newer kernel.

Thx!

At face value, at least, the updated BIOS seems a prerequisite considering you’re using a Ryzen CPU. However, the LTS kernel is a valid suggestion whether or not the BIOS solves the issue.

Primary: I would check if you have 1 more female screw between your Mainboard and your PC Case, maybe there is a female screw pressed bellow your MB, where the MB don’t have a hole and forced unwanted pressure.

Secondary: Less devices maybe helps, to have more IRQ’s available. I would deactivate unused devices in Bios… like not needed Sata Ports, iGPU and stuff like that.

Atleast sometimes it could reduced latency spikes, that could lead to distorted sound for example.

I updated kernel to 6.6.32 and updated the Bios to the latest. The problem still occures, but it is less frequent (might be random). I also used another m.2 and installed a fresh copy of manjaro and it still happens. I contacted Asrock for further support.

I unplugged two harddrives, but I will check what else I can disable.

Check first if you have maybe unneeded female screw under your MB… you can open your PC Case from the backside and use a flashlight to maybe find out how many holes your MB has to attach with screws, for example if your MB has 8 holes to attach but you can identify 9 filled threads on your backside from your PC Case… then you maybe found the problem.

But for sure, if you didnt make a mistake while installing your MB, then its still possible that you need RMA your MB instead.
