GUI unresponsive after login

Hello Manjaro community.

First, let me inform you that the target system is maybe not suitable for an old device; please let me know if my device is out of scope. It is a laptop from 2007: HP Pavilion dv6000 with a nVidia GeForce Go 7400.

My Manjaro OS installation boots up fine until I reach the login screen. On the login screen, I can click on buttons, type in my password, no problem.

But once on the destop, although I can move the mouse cursor nicely, it is malformed, and I cannot click anything. I’ve also noticed that the clock shown at the bottom right corner has stopped.

However, I can still Ctrl + Alt + F2 to get a responsive terminal. I noticed that I have to wait something like 15-20 seconds to get the login prompt. I don’t have to wait that long when the GUI is on the logon screen (before I type in my password in the GUI).

I use XFCE, and the free drivers.

What is going on? What can I do to investigate?

Many thanks!

Hi @mgn, and welcome!

You are, indeed correct that this is a rather old machine. This might be the reason. I’d suggest trying one of the spins that don’t use as much resources:

The Manjaro Cinnamon community edition might also be worth looking at; obviously not as light as LXQt but possibly still viable on your hardware.

I suggest boot the Live ISO used to install Manjaro XFCE, select Free drivers in the GRUB boot menu and get more information about system:
