Grub problem after update can't boot and get this message symbol grub_memcpy not found

I have installed in my desktop PC dual boot Windows first Manjaro Linux. After update my grub disappears and boot only from windows. After boot with Manjaro linux Usb live and chroot reinstalled and update grub and i got symbol grub_memcpy not found. I can’t boot anymore neither Manjaro or Linux.
Any help is welcome..

For better understanding of your system please boot into a live ISO, open a terminal and enter

$ sudo blkid

What command did you use to restore the bootloader?

I must say that my desktop PC is dual boot separate SSD Disks with Windows first Manjaro Linux second install and boots with Manjaro grub.
The real problem began after update and grub menu had some Kernels that couldn’t boot my system. Anyway my windows boot were ok! After boot with Manjaro linux Usb live and chroot reinstalled and update grub and with some bad terminal codes i lost Manjaro from grub menu first and Windows boot second and then got

Verifying DMI Pool Data
error: symbol grub_memcpy not found
Entering rescure mode
grub rescue> _

My system is in BIOS/GPT

and my

unallocated 2.15 MB

/dev/sdb1 ext4 224.43 GB boot
/dev/sdb2 Linux-swap 8.45 GB swap

In my second attempt i tried with Manjaro live USB to chroot reinstalled and update grub with

sudo grub-install --force --recheck --no-rs-codes --modules=“part_msdos part_gpt” --target=“i386-pc” /dev/sdb

sudo update-grub

and this detects windows on grub menu but not manjaro but got this error.

Its output will be used to detect bootable binaries on them and create new boot entries.

and when in chroot usb live in terminal give mhwd-kernel -li

After all i can’t understand why i can’t see manjaro on my grub menu. I suspect maybe is a kernel Conflict with my system, or an ERROR: mkdir /var/lock/dmraid.

I would appreciate your opinion on this!

[Mini-HowTo] Provide System Information

Basic details provided by *-fetch type apps might give enough information for someone wishing to buy a computer, however, for Support purposes it’s best to ask your system directly.

Output of the inxi command will generate more useful and detailed information for those who may wish to help:

Suggested inxi command (use either):

inxi -zv8 (short-form)
inxi --filter --verbosity=8 (long-form)

Command output should be presented as pre-formatted text in accordance with forum guidelines. :eyes:

Running inxi within a chroot environment

  • Add --color=0 to the long-form command, or…
  • Change the short-form command to inxi -zv8c0

Your privacy is respected

[Mini-HowTo] Present code or command output

Note: Grave accent (or, backtick) characters are used. :eyes:

For inline code or to show a single command:

  • please follow this simple example: code here.

For multi-line command output:

  • place text beween two rows of three (```) backtick characters to form a scrollable text box, or …
  • use the </> button in the Compose window to achieve the same result.

The empty row between these rows of backtick characters is where to paste any multi-line command output (such as inxi).

An example of a pre-formatted text enclosure:

What is a Quark?

A. In Physics, an elementary particle and fundamental constituent of matter.
B. A character from the Star Trek: "Deep Space Nine" television series.
C. A soft, creamy, usually unsalted cheese traditional to central Europe.

My idea was that you add missing backticks to your post, not that you create a single post for each output. Actually, we avoid creating consecutive posts, these should be merged to one post. Please read the tutorial of how to post. So, please delete your last 4 posts and instead edit the existing post Grub problem after update can't boot and get this message symbol grub_memcpy not found - #4 by anton74

Notice that you used block quotes (>) that is a single bigger sign and not 3 backticks ```. I edited your post such that you could see how it works

You say your system is BIOS/GPT. Means not UEFI/GPT, right?

If you boot Windows in BIOS mode which is quite strange as UEFI is Windows standard for quiet a while then I don’t understand why you have an ESP on /dev/sdc2. Maybe I read your system wrong but I don’t see an ESP on the Windows disk.

Mixing to boot in UEFI and BIOS mode is possible as long as you do this from your firmware. If Manjaro is booted in UEFI mode, I woud bet it’s impossible to boot Wndows and vice versa, if Windows is installed in BIOS mode. Grub is pretty fail proof, so maybe it worked somehow in the past. Anyway, it’s not a good approach to mix if you wish to boot both OS via Manjaro’s grub menu. In this case better use one boot mode, only. If you agree, you have to decide what system should be changed. Probably easier is to change Manjaro to BIOS mode, you only need to restore the system AFTER booting the live ISO in BIOS mode, chroot into your system and then restore the boot loader for BIOS mode as given in the wiki.

There also is (or at least was) a “convert GPT” command one can/could use from within Windows, but beware that doing this will likely destroy anything else you have on the disk which isn’t Windows-related. So in that case one would need to reinstall Manjaro (also in (U)EFI mode).

@Wollie

No i was wrong. I boot from Manjaro Usb live and check gparted and my partition table for both SSD drives is Partition Table MS DOS (MBR) same both in Windows and for the Manjaro. Τherefore my system is a BIOS/MBR.

When i boot my pc on startup my Manjaro grub menu appears but detects only Windows and i can boot windows without a problem, but can’t detects Manjaro that’s the problem.

My system has no UEFI. Νot make sense.
And I can’t see my files on SSD that Manjaro is installed. I see the drive on PC BIOS and on Gparted but not in file manager in Manjaro Live Usb.
Strange!

I think this is the wrong device. You should use the disk where Manjaro is installed, this looks to be /dev/sdc.

Deleted, see post of @dmt.

According to the above sdc is the live USB (that’s why it has an EFI partition) and sdb is the Manjaro SSD.

@anton74

It’s been a long time since I had a BIOS install, but IIRC (which I might not) grub doesn’t seem to be picking up anything from sdb.

Try reinstalling a kernel from chroot.

pacman -Syu linux71

grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Are you sure?

inxi -zcv8

[manjaro /]#

Windows installed on /dev/sda and Manjaro Linux on /dev/sdb and my system is BIOS/MBR for all two. My grub is installed and update on /dev/sdb.

I’d get rid of that first. It can be reinstalled if anything needs it.

For confirmation:

pacman -Qi lib32-audit

… You may also need to remove lib32-pam and lib32-libcap.

In my case, the latter has nothing depending on it, but check to make sure.

I 've done all you said

and unfortunately the same result

[manjaro /]#

I would try removing those packages in the reverse order i.e. starting with

pacman -Rns lib32-libcap

.. and doing the same with the others.

I removed those packages with your code and done all of them with once.

[manjaro /]# pacman -Rns lib32-libcap

Restart. And Voila! That’s it i boot from Manjaro!

Many thanks for all of you! You are all magnificent !

Linux71 is EOL, linux618 is LTS and linux72 is latest stable.

I think to install linux618 kernel because is LTS, but I’m afraid maybe this cause problems. What’s your opinion?

I usually have both - latest LTS and latest stable - installed.
