Grub not showing up on boot

Hi,

I’ve installed Manjaro KDE along side Windows, but Grub doesn’t show up at boot. I’ve tried following several guides online, but none successfully solved this problem.

Here’s some information:

manjaro-chroot -a  255 ✘

The boot should be “sda1”, right?

I’m sorry, but I’m not very good at Linux. Any help in regards to this would be appreciated. I’m booted into Manjaro with live USB.

Thanks

Hello and Welcome to Manjaro,
Is this a fresh install and first time install?

Do you share one drive for Manjaro and Windows?

You will run into less problems if you use 1 drive for Manjaro and another for Windows.

Please post your system Info:

inxi --admin --verbosity=5 --filter --no-host --width

Hi and thank you.

Yes, fresh and first install on the same drive on a laptop.

The output:

How did you created this Bootstick? Was it with Rufus or Ventoy?

I remember that Rufus created 2 different boot entry’s for the Live Boot Environment, to install in UEFI or for MBR.

Im still prefer to use MBR today and if you use EFI as your EFI Partitions looks like, im not sure whats going on.

Besides the information that you first should install Windows and then Linux, because Windows loves to overwrite your Boot Files.

Edit: Did you disabled Fast Boot under Windows and in Bios?
And also disable Secure Boot in Bios, is very important.

I used Rufus to create the bootstick. Windows was already on the machine when I installed Manjaro.

I could try to use MBR instead of UEFI creating the bootable USB, and reinstall.

I’ve disabled fastboot in Bios, but do I have to do that in Windows as well?

Secure boot is also disabled

The problem is, that Windows is maybe already installed in EFI Mode, im not sure if this is a good idea now, to change this.

You may need to reinstall Windows then also too, probably you should stick to UEFI then, normally there are enough people around that use EFI,
im actually not sure if this missing Grub entry’s are in relation with a EFI install.

I also created a little gamer guide/overview under Steam, it gives a few points how to make a good transition from Windows to Linux:

Yeah in Energy Settings, i think somewhere under Hibernation under Win10?

I’ve booted into windows and disabled fast startup already. I still don’t get Grub, or should i proceed to reinstall Manjaro at this point?

Possible thats it , maybe look closer if you install Manjaro the right way which the auto install suggested (MBR or EFI?) and give it a try…

I can recommend a Home Partition btw. its easier to backup in future.

But im still not sure if that helps, maybe another forum member has a better idea.

:man_shrugging:

You have the newest ISO?

Can you boot Manjaro? If not then you may have to set the boot priority in the UEFI.

Grub is hidden by default unless it has detected more than one OS, which it hasn’t according to your output.

To show the grub menu, you can press either Shift or Esc after POST (it depends if it’s BIOS or UEFI, but I can’t remember which so alternate Shift and Esc).

To have it shown permanently you can edit /etc/default/grub and set GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE to menu.

I think you mean SHIFT.

Edit:

Ah i should open my eyes: you initialised your drive as MBR related to your logs… but you installed it with EFI and thats may should the reason why it can’t find the GRUB.

Carefully watch the right Rufus entry, there should be 2 Boot entrys available when you boot from your Manjaro Bootstick.

Ok, let me try to create the USB image one more time

I can chose between MBR and GPT. Which one should I use?

MBR= BIOS & UEFI
GPT= UEFI (NON CSM)

I think it depends on the Rufus version… i haven’t used Rufus for a long time.

Some versions gave option to use it for MBR and the other to create it with EFI, but as far i remember. The Bootstick gaves me 2 option in Bios to choose.

One was EFI and the other was MBR… and you see the result later at the auto install which the installer recommend. If you choosed the wrong boot entry… choose the other one next.

Ok, then I’ll give it a go with GPT. I’ll let you know how it went after I’ve installed.

I’d say UEFI/GPT is to be preferred. sda would need a new partition table.

What is Windows installed as? Probably best to stick with the same as windows. If windows is there, then presumably it’s MBR, since you only have one drive and it’s MBR. Unless you disconnected a drive with windows on.

Since your SSD is already initialised in this mode… but its up to you.

As i said, you may need to reinstall Windows if you want to switch to GPT/UEFI now.

A New Partition Table, would reset the whole drive and you need probably a backup.

I personally prefer MBR because of higher security. But you have less Partitions… only max 4 Partitions per drive, is a downside.

So its a trade off… choose your poison :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Ok, thanks a lot for your help both of you. I’ll get back to this again tomorrow as it’s getting late here.

I’ll post an update here.

Cheers

Go with whatever windows is installed as.

@Kobold

Never heard of MBR providing better security, any links?

I think its a old battle, UEFI was highly criticised since it firstly was introduced.

A Bios and a OS should be separated.

A Bootvirus which can hidden in EFI and possible a Virus infection, can do changes around your Bios settings… no thanks.

But i have not right now a link… sry.

Last big news, was AMD Driver settings was messing around with AMD Mainboards and was Overclocking their CPU… which lead to massive instability AMD PC’s (and who knows, how many peoples PC’s gets destroyed from this secretly changes, AMD won’t pay the bills :innocent:).

I already posted a few times a link about that… in our forum:

I only have this german news article here, maybe you have a translation tool:
