GRUB INSTALL ERROR: Unknown filesystem

hello manjaro forum,

i am in live manjaro environment (i was using manjaro in dual boot with windows 10).
my laptop is not showing the grub menu , it directly boots into the windows 10 OS,
earlier i used below commands to fix the grub and it always worked.

sudo su
mount /dev/sda10 /mnt
mount /dev/sda11 /mnt/boot/efi
cd /mnt
mount -t proc proc /mnt/proc
mount -t sysfs sys /mnt/sys
mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev
mount -t devpts pts /mnt/dev/pts
chroot /mnt
grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=manjaro --recheck
update-grub
exit
exit
reboot

But today , i am stuck in an error ,
after this command
grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=manjaro --recheck

its saying

grub-install: unknown filesystem

please let me know if need any more information, please help as soon as possible i am searching the solution for two hours nothing seems to be working…

What does the following yield?

sudo grub-probe -d /dev/sda10

While in the live system, did you try force-checking the root file-system? I’m guessing that sda10 is your Manjaro root, ext4?

Out of curiosity, what happens if you pause/interrupt the laptop’s boot screen? How many EFI boot menu entries does it detect and allow you to choose from?

sda10 is my manjaro root directory,
i dont know how to interupt the boot screen,
i have two efi menu entries, windows 10 and manjaro
but it directly boots into the windows OS without showing me the grub menu

Okay, to clarify you mean that if you select the “manjaro” option under your laptop’s EFI boot entries, it immediately boots into Windows 10 without a Grub menu delay?

Interrupt the boot process as in holding down a particular key to override the boot options. (Different for each computer. It could be F1, F2, F9, F10, F12, ESC, DEL, etc.)

i tried this approach , it only shows windows boot manager.
by default it boots into windows and if i interrupt it doesn’t show me manjaro entry

So manually overriding the boot selection and specifically choosing “manjaro” instead of “Windows”, it seems to just skip the Grub menu? or do you mean recently there is no longer a “manjaro” entry for your EFI boot options?

I noticed you didn’t specify the device in your grub-install command. I’m going to try something out on my own Manjaro box.

yes there is no manjaro entry,
in my live environment i can see the partion but it doesnt letting me boot into manjaro.

let me know what command needs to be modified

So the EFI entry is missing. Can you try again, this time specifying the device in your grub-install command? I’m not entirely sure of your layout or system, but what if you manually specify /dev/sda at the end of the command?

and i want to ask should i start from the start or just enter this command provided by you.

Okay, give me a moment. I want to test this out on my own dual-boot system (Windows 10 + Manjaro) just to make sure.

In the meantime, if you want to just try this out on your own, the command would look like so:

grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=manjaro --recheck /dev/sda

You append /dev/sda to the end of the command, assuming this is your HDD/SSD drive.

But I need to test this to be safe. There was a recent change to Grub’s defaults that removes the OS-prober, which will remove the Grub entry for Windows 10.

Try from these approaches:

First reboot into the live session, clean start.

Force a fsck on your Manjaro root file-system.

sudo fsck -f -v /dev/sda10

Next, rather than manually chroot in a clean live session (with all those commands), use the built-in “manjaro-chroot -a” command:

manjaro-chroot -a

Once inside, retry grub-install /dev/sda with the -v flag for a verbose output, that might hint to the problem:

grub-install -v /dev/sda

And finally update the menu:

update-grub

Now exit and reboot.

When I tested this on my own dual-boot setup, it worked fine, and I didn’t need to supply any extra options. The above command, grub-install is able to automatically detect the proper directories and files within a chroot environment.

Make sure this is a freshly booted live session.
