Grub breaks after a Windows boot

Hello

I would like help to regain access to my system.

I keep a Windows in dual boot for a game and a program not available on Linux unfortunately.
After a reboot, I find myself with grub in emergency mode, I tried to correct this and partially succeeded.

I now have access to a grub menu, but on selecting manjaro, I end up with grub in emergency mode.
With no information on the cause.

In context: it’s a btrfs installation on an ssd disk in dual boot with Windows on another disk in nvme.

I tried reinstalling grub in bios mode, having had quite a few problems with uefi in the past, so I assumed I’d done this type of installation… With what I found in /boot I think it was more an uefi type installation, so I started again for this type.

I’ve tried to find the cause with the dmesg and journal -xe commands, but I have no further ideas.

test -d /sys/firmware/efi && echo efi || echo bios
efi

You might like to use rEFInd bootloader to handle booting (EFI mode). The link should give all information needed, but try this one rEFInd (ArchWiki) as well, for good measure. Cheers.

I had this problem twice with a HP laptop that used bios to select which OS to start. I wasn’t alble to edit the bios to add back my Linux so I just reinstalled. I was able to recover my data with a USB boot. After the second time I just gave up on Windows,

You can collect information from a live manjaro using inxi or maxi

Welcome to Manjaro! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

  1. Please read the information behind this link. It will help you to post necessary information.
  1. Please press the three dots below your post and then press the :pencil2:
  • If you give us information about your system, we can see what we’re talking about and make better suggestions.
  • You can do this by using inxi in a terminal or in console.
sudo inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width
  • Personally identifiable information such as serial numbers and MAC addresses are filtered out by this command
  • Presenting the information in this way allows everyone to be familiar with the format and quickly find the items they need without missing anything.
  1. Copy the output from inxi (including the command) and paste it into your post.
  • To make it more readable, add 3 backticks ``` on an extra line before and after the pasted text.

Have you already :mag: for your problem in the forum ? (Wisdom lies in asking → listening → reading  )

What is ‘grub ko’?

Hello,

Grub ko => Grub in rescue mode with no information on the reason for the emergency

You need a EFI partition for Windows and another for Linux.
I had the same problem some time ago.

Do you mean the grub prompt, aka grub bash?

If so it’s not too tricky to boot from there and once booted, to fix grub. No need for a re-install - at least not yet.

It’s been so long since I’ve dual booted Windows, but I do have an SSD with Windows on it. (But I boot via QEMU.) So I actually have to disable in /etc/default/grub so os-prober does not pick it up and make a menu entry for it.

But it should be really easy to fix. But you will need to boot USB and manjaro-chroot’ing into your environment. Not really sure what part you’re stuck on though.

Could be a Hawaiian delicacy of some kind; a grub stew, maybe.

Obviously a knock-out dish.

I reinstalled/reconfigured grub from a chroot, now I have the system booting to grub and then switching to emergency mode (from systemd if I’m not mistaken).

I then looked in the log for errors, systemctl --failed returning a failed snap mount.
In crude mode, but not too much, :troll:I disabled the service in question to test.
Then a reboot allowed me to see that the blocking was now coming from my configuration in /etc/fstab of the line concerning windows. I’ll see if its uuid has changed. In any case, commenting on this line allowed me to start up at last
