In KDE, can we expect to see grid view access via the “edges” capability become available again any time soon?
That is difficult to say. So far I have not seen any mention of it yet in the changelogs for Plasma 6.1, but I too would like to see it return as an option. It’s a much more usable feature than the desktop cube, in my personal opinion.
I agree, much, much more usable in my opinion. I’ve put an Icon on the task bar that runs the meta-G combo via xdotool but that it quite klunky compared to getting there via edges.
Well, in that case, why not put a desktop pager on your panel?
It’s at least somewhat easy to navigate and it doesn’t require the extra step of having to invoke xdotool
.
There is a bug report about it, 475077 – Show non-linear virtual desktop arrangements again How much is actually being done, I’m not sure. As each update I receive doesn’t seem to mention progress, just more talk.
In the meantime I using Super + G to bring up the Grid.
xdotool won’t work for me as I’m using wayland.
I am not likely to understand your question fully - my apologies beforehand.
I am using a kwin script called KZones - I don’t know if it works for Plasma 5 - but on Plasma 6 it is highly configurable and very useful.
You can install it using the Get New… button under Window Management → KWin Scripts
Same here: I use Win + G for Grid and Win + C for Cube.
No, that is not what is being discussed here.
What you are talking about is tiling, and Plasma does already have a built-in functionality for that, commonly by invoking Meta+T — on my own system I’ve changed this to a different shortcut.
What the rest of us are referring to however is the effect you get when pressing Meta+G — at least, unless you have reassigned that keyboard shortcut.
In Plasma 5, it used to be available as one of the options for a hot spot at the screen edges, but in Plasma 6, it is no longer possible to do so. You still get the hot spots, but the Desktop Grid is currently no longer one of the assignable effects.
Super, Win, Meta all seem to apply to the Key.
I’ve also tried ydotool and wtype, but they don’t work for me… it maybe Kwin that’s the problem,
Yet it works marvelously in Neon Linux (KDE on Ubuntu) via edges.
I wonder if it works on Fedora. Or Arch.
I see - on unstable branch the hotspot can be assigned to Grid - is that the feature you discuss ?
Yes! Grid. That’s what I’m missing so much. Unstable branch of manjaro?
Aye, that’s the one. It’s good to see that they brought it back for Plasma 6.1.
Yes, that used to be available in Plasma 5, what version of Plasma 6 is in Unstable?
Waiting with 'bated breath, for it to arrive in Stable.
Currently 6.1.3-1.0
My keyboard (Logitech) presumptuously puts the Microsoft Windows logo on that key. But that’s fine with me, because whenever people ask me “What Windows version are you using?”, I answer “X11”; the confused scowls amuse me.
@linux-aarhus used to sell Manjaro stickers — I do not know whether he still does — some of which were intended to be stuck to those keys.
That is an incredibly good joke
I don’t - I gave them all to @philm
