This is probably my fault somewhat as I’ve been putting off updating for a couple of weeks, and as a result I had a lot of packages to update when I did. I updated with sudo pacman -Syyu
, and also updated to Kernel 5.11.2-1. Because I updated a lot of stuff at once, some things stopped working, which is normal, if this happens I usually just reboot and all the new packages that start on boot kick in properly, then everything works just fine. But now when I try to login on tty1, the screen freezes. I can still move my cursor, but the clock will not change, so I know it’s frozen. I can still login on tty2 however, and upon realizing this I tried running sudo pacman-mirrors -f && sudo pacman -Syyu
, assuming something had broken during the update. The only thing that happened from that was a chromium update.
I did find a consistent workaround upon restarting, that leads me to believe something is bugged with how KDE logs in graphically. If I log in to my account on tty2 FIRST, then switch back to tty1 to log in, it works every time. I can then logout of tty2 once logged in graphically, as my lock screen is unaffected by this. But this is somewhat irritating. I can only guess this works because a command line login brings some variable into the correct value in memory, which then allows the KDE login to use that value as well and complete the login.
Running w
on tty2 whilst tty1 is trying to login (when the workaround is not in place) only reveals the instance on tty2 running, so tty1 is not able to register as logged in without the workaround.
The expected output of w if I was logged in would be along the lines of:
18:16:03 up 34 min, 3 users, load average: 0.54, 0.64, 0.79
USER TTY LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT
iruy tty1 17:43 33:50 1:41 0.08s /usr/bin/startplasma-x11
iruy pts/0 17:43 32:38 0.00s 2.58s /bin/kded5
iruy pts/1 17:43 0.00s 12:58 0.00s w
I’ve also tried booting from other kernels, specifically versions 5.10.19-1 and 5.9.16-1, to find the issue repeatable there, which leads me to believe this has something to do with KDE
Any ideas on what I can do to login normally again? Also please tell me what other diagnostics I can run here as I don’t know much about KDE’s file structure or how to debug it. Thanks

The line that stands out for me here is: Mar 12 14:48:16 manjaro.local systemd[1]: Stopped User Manager for UID 973
. A quick check of /etc/passwd reveals UID 973 to belong to “Simple Desktop Display Manager”, which would make sense if the desktop is unable to start.
Output of cat /etc/passwd | grep 973
:
sddm:x:973:973:Simple Desktop Display Manager:/var/lib/sddm:/sbin/nologin
So, the question seems to be: “What is causing the display manager to crash that is fixed by FIRST logging into command line of tty2?” If someone can help me figure this out then I believe the problem can be resolved
