Grammatical Errors (English) on Installer

On the Office Suite selection screen for the installer, the text says:

“You can always install multiple Office suite applications on you system.”

The second last word should be “your” — not “you”

Below that, there is a run-on (three clause) sentence:

“If you don’t want to install an office suite, that’s fine, you can install one later as needed.”

This is better expressed in English by substituting a semicolon ( for the second comma.

I agree with the first one - it may be a typo and should be corrected in due time.

Not so sure about the second objection - but I’m no native speaker/writer of the language.
I have rarely, if ever, seen a sentence with a semicolon in it.
The better way (to me) would be:
Make these two sentences.
second one starts where you suggest to put the semicolon …

I myself have stopped reading through these hints a long time ago.
Superfluous to me.
But not for everyone - and they are there and should be “good english”.

Indeed, either approach would be satisfactory as long as the intended meaning is communicated. Grammar will no doubt be reviewed as appropriate in a future iteration of Calamares.

Calamares is the default installer for all official Manjaro ISO images released, and your Feedback topic has little to do with Plasma. Your selected topic categories have been adjusted accordingly.

Thank you for your interest.

“You can always install multiple Office suite applications on you system.”

“You can install multiple office suite applications"

“If you don’t want to install an office suite, that’s fine, you can install one later as needed.”

“If you don’t want to install an office suite now, it can be installed later”

“that’s fine” could be a meme distraction for some

If you don’t want to install an office suite, that’s fine; you can install one later as needed.

Yes, this checks out… there are two complete clauses.

Then there’s slightly more formal without contractions.

If you do not wish to install an office suite, that is fine; you can install one later if needed.

Self-proclaimed grammar Nazi here.

I would use the semicolon personally to fix the sentence. But I’d rather just change the whole sentence.

Think of your audience. You want clear and concise.

If you do not wish to install an office suite, that is fine; you can install one later if needed.

To:

Office suites can always be installed in the future.

Semicolon in Latin is similar to the Greek question mark ; and might also be confusing for users more familiar with writing code than documentation. For a side comment it might be better to use dashes – but it does not improve the clarity and can be omitted

“always” can also be omitted - someone might think office suites must be reinstalled frequently

Agree with all comments. My intention was simply to point out the error and one way to fix it. Breaking it into two sentences is certainly a valid option and possibly a better one according to the KISS principle.

Is this posting visible to developers (or translators)? Do I need to post it elsewhere?

Well, if we’re arguing semantics, here’s my two cents:

“Only one of the Office suites offered may be selected during Manjaro installation. Additional Office suites may be installed at a later time, if desired.”

This post will no doubt be read and the task added to the appropriate “To Do” list.

This is more misleading - to say ‘only one may be selected during Manjaro installation’ is strange… Better to say ‘You can select one office suite during the Manjaro installation, or you can install them later’.

There was nothing misleading.

It just sounds strange to me, then, that you’d say ‘only one office suite may be selected during Manjaro installation’.

I’d just say ‘You can select an Office suite to be included in the initial installation, but if you choose not to you can install them later’. I don’t see the need to point out that you can choose to install multiple office suites - that’s a bit niche.

It followed the examples previously given.

I personally see no great need to add anything beyond: “Choose an Office suite”.
