Google Maps suddenly has no 3D

All of a sudden I can’t do 3D views in Google maps. This is happening in both Firefox and Chrome. On other systems (e.g. hackintosh) the 3D is still there so I don’t think Google has turned this off. Seems like something has gone wrong with my system’s support? It’s an MSI Delta 15 laptop (which has an AMD GPU). The compass control, and “3D” button are both gone and also it doesn’t respond to the usual controls that would let me tilt the perspective.

Anybody else seeing anything like this? Basic system details below. And according to Firefox about:support, it is using WebRender (software) for compositing. Not sure why it says “(software)”. The details do show that firefox knows about the GPU. I can post full details from about:support if that’s helpful, but at the moment I’m just wondering if anyone else has seen or is seeing this?

Have you updated your system?

Linux 7.1 has many improvements for AMD over Linux 6.1 (although not an LTS)

Plasma is now 6.7.4 and your browser may need refreshing as well…

You may have to enable it. You can do this by clicking on the Map/Layers box at the bottom of the map and selecting More:

Then select Globe View in the options box that pops up:

Just to note that I also have a Ryzen 7 5800H, and I have encountered no issues browsing Google Maps.

Also, you might want to open the about:config page in firefox and make sure that webgl.disabled is set to false (which should be the default). That suggestion comes from this Reddit thread: No 3D in Google Maps on Firefox (2022) : r/firefox. Restart the browser if you change the value, and see if the issue still persists.

LTS kernels are not automatically upgraded to later major versions. One has to explicitly and manually install a newer LTS kernel, and then — after booting up into it — eventually manually remove the older LTS kernel, preferably by way of mhwd-kernel.

I’ve just installed 6.18 and 7.1 and tried to boot from both of these and it failed. 6.1 still works (thank goodness).

The major error I got was “failed to mount /extra” in both cases which makes no sense because it is literally “extra” space, and the last thing in the fstab after the usual boot, root, home, tmp. And it is an ext4 fs just like root and home. It shouldn’t have mounting issues and if it did it shouldn’t block booting. But that’s probably a thing to debug another day (or at least in a different thread).

It depends on the entry for that filesystem in /etc/fstab — you can add nofail to its mount options — and whether the filesystem has any damage on it (or is otherwise unavailable).

I don’t think we’re going to find a solution easily until we get the system booting into a more modern kernel. As the amdgpu drivers are contained in the kernel, often switching kernels will fix graphics issues on AMD systems. There may be a regression in the linux61 kernel that is causing the issue, or it could be something else. So, the kernel being the cause needs to be eliminated.

I just started firefox in troubleshooting mode and it also said WebRender (software), so it probably isn’t related to the Google Maps issue on your system.

OK… I guess it was the kernel.

I went to boot 6.18 kernel again so that I could take a photo of the on-screen error messages and… it just booted with no problems.

And when it came up, Google Maps had 3D available again.

The ONLY thing I had done in between was to umount /extra, and run “fsck -n” on it. Which by definition doesn’t do anything (and also it said it was fine). Then I rebooted again. (And, as an aside this was the first reboot in a while that actually just worked instead of hanging until power cycle.)

If I don’t select a kernel, does it always boot from the last kernel I used? Newest? Most recently installed?

The default for grub is to boot from the last selected kernel (i.e. the last kernel you used). This is set in /etc/default/grub:

# GRUB boot loader configuration

GRUB_DEFAULT=saved

But this is currently broken, due to the default filesystem now being btrfs and /boot being on the root filesystem by default as well.

grub cannot write to btrfs — and in some cases even has problems reading from it — which is why the last-booted entry won’t get saved to /boot/grub/grub.cfg. If /boot is on ext4 on the other hand — it does not need to be a separate partition if the root filesystem itself is ext4 — then it’ll still work.

You have to keep in mind that when grub attempts to save the last-booted entry, it is grub itself which, by way of its built-in filesystem drivers, does the (attempted) write, because the operating system has not even been loaded yet.

@thomasafine, if you do not manually choose another kernel, then grub will boot the kernel with the highest version number. So if you have 7.1 and 6.18 installed, it will boot into 7.1 by default.

You can either way easily determine which kernel you’re currently running, with…

uname -r

That is, not until enabling the necessary settings as @scotty65 has described (above).

From observation, enabling Globe view allows zooming out to see the full globe, however, to use the “Street View” feature, Satellite must be selected also.

Whether there are recent changes to Google Maps in this regard, I can’t say, but keep in mind that browser security options and extensions can potentially affect site features.

Your hardware or operating system is likely unrelated to what you perceive as an issue.

To clarify – “(software)” is simply an indicator that software rendering rather than hardware rendering is being used – this is typically nothing to be concerned with.

Checked this on my system and it was greyed out also. Enabling WebGL from the security indicator to the left of the URL fixed it.

GRUB_DEFAULT sets the default boot menu entry in /etc/default/grub. Valid values include numbers (starting at 0), entries from grub.cfg such as “$menuentry_id_option”, and “saved”.

Setting GRUB_DEFAULT=1 boots the second boot menu entry and so on.

If one uses expanding menu entries:
GRUB_DEFAULT="1>0" boots the first submenu entry in the second main entry.

Even with BTRFS, there are limited options for controlling which boot entry is used.

Or you put /boot on a separate partition with ext4 and mount /boot in your fstab.
