Gnome version:
GNOME 44.3

I didn’t use my PC for some weeks and after I started using it againg my Gnome Theme is buggy a little. I say buggy because even when I use the default its always both dark and light theme, and many applications won’t use any theme I would set.

Here some pics:

Has anyone else noticed this issue before?

Hello, when you use any theme you should keep in mind that shell theme and theme for old application must be the same. In gnome tweaks - appearence choose the theme for a legacy apps and for shell. See screenshot from my system: i preffer light theme, so my choice for legacy apps is “orchis light”; in this case i got full light shell apps and legacy (in gnome settings i choose light theme)

As someone who tried to theme Gnome before I will warn you this,

Gnome is a continuous work. Something may work in Gnome 43 and not in 44. Themes are currently particularly vulnerable to this because the Gnome team decided to leave themes behind to favor libawaita and theme that instead. So far not even accent colors after years. So its a work-in-progress.

Back to user themes, we have the situation to theme OLD GTK2, GTK3 which you can do with Gnome Tweaks. Next GTK4 which breaks every update, finally 3rd party like Flatpaks (which you can theme with Flatseal/Termina) and other apps that use its own UI innate to the app and don’t use anything from the desktop enviroment. Sometimes you need to select “dark mode” manually and/or use “system” or “GTK/Gnome/Native” theme. Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird have these quirks.

I believe Thunderbird uses GTK3 and you should google for more info. Also In my experience switching from light mode to dark mode and back breaks themes because GTK3 wasn’t made for that, only GTK4. So basically you’re trying a “modern” feature (dark mode which was introduced in Gnome 40 and GTK4) with GTK3 patchwork.

So yeah, you can have one or the other.

Thanks! But I already know this.

Here is my tweaks (Funny because tweaks is light too even when dark is enabled):

So you say I should use GTK3. But I can’t just remove GTK4 right? There are many dependencies I maybe will destroy everything haha. What would be your suggestion?

If you want to keep using Gnome we can only wait. Otherwise if you really want theming then other desktop enviroments use only GTK3 like cinnamon or xfce I think. Don’t use them much less theme them but I recall those can use GTK2 or/and 3 I think. Another option would be to downgrade to gnome 42 even some distros still use gnome 43 but most of them already in 44 so its an uphill battle.

I guess we just have to wait untill GTK4 is ready which may be when GTK5 gets usable :upside_down_face:

Sooo a little time has passed. Because I just did what @Raik said. Wait. But I realized something. If I start an application with root the gnome theme works!

Left opened with user right opened with root:

But I don’t know what that exactly mean. maybe the .themes directory?

Greetings.

You are not up to date. GNOME 44 has been in the stable branch for months.

Yes, any theme that is incompatible with the current GNOME version will have issues.

NEVER run an application as root that should not be–especially a GUI. You have been warned.

Thanks for your answer.

Why am I not up to date? My Gnome Version is 44 and you say 44 is stable branch.

I know the rule that says never run a application as root. I’m not that new on Linux. But I needed to open nvidia-settings as root to apply settings and I didn’t want to use the shell, and then I tried to open tilix with root just to see if the theme works then. And yes it works when I start it as root. That doesn’t mean I will use all my application as root.

See your post I quoted above that my statement was based on.

Then don’t. Running something as root because something is “not working” will never solve the issue. It will just create more problems.

I don’t know how you installed the Catppuccin theme, but the latest tagged release on GitHub is from last year and apparently is not compatible with GNOME 44. Either check it out from git or maybe there’s an updated release on Pling.

Yeah. You quoted my version “GNOME 44.3”. But that is the newest. Or am I wrong?

I don’t think you quite got me right. I know that. I didn’t use root to change anything. I just wanted to know which theme is the application using IF I WOULD be using root.

I installed it as its documented on their Github page. But actually that could be the case. That Catppuccin is not compatible. Have you any recommendations for themes that would be compatible?

Sorry, My brain apparently is acting slightly dyslexic today and it thought you said 43.4 when you said 44.3. :man_facepalming:

Yes, 44.3 is the current version in the stable branch.

Haha no problem!

I installed another theme that officially supports GNOME 44 and I have sadly the same problem. :frowning:

You see at the top right thats the design (I know not that pretty) and the application under it:

So the applications (and the dock) wont take the theme. Am I missing something?

You didn’t set Legacy Applications (Gtk 3) to Marble-purple-dark.

Also see if there are instructions from the developer if anything else needs to be done.

Yes you were right. But there were no legacy application for that theme. So I tried using default again and it was the same problem. :frowning:

FYI, the Legacy (GTK3) Theme Scheme Auto Switcher extension (gnome-shell-extension-legacy-theme-auto-switcher) will autocratically switch the Legacy Applications theme to match the Light / Dark selection in Settings > Appearance.

Sadly that’s not it. It doesn’t matter if I have the extension on or off. The light theme stays for many apps.

Define “many apps”. There will be a difference if the application is Gtk3 / Gtk4 or Qt5 / Qt6.

You should also check your ~/.config/gtk-3.0/ and ~/.config/gtk-4.0/ folders for any customizations created by third-party themes.

For example:
gnome-tweaks
thunderbird
nxidia-settings
Bitwarden
tilix
(default) terminal

~/.config/gtk-4.0 ls -lia

I actually don’t know what should be special. Maybe the link?
