Gnome Shell crashes frequently on Nvidia driver

Hello

Gnome Shell has been crashing randomly (as far as I can tell) since the 2023-06-04 update.

It actually crashed while I was installing the 2023-07-10 update & I had to reinstall Manjaro (cause that’s quicker).

I’m currently running Wayland cause it doesn’t crash, so that’s nice. But, VMWare can’t capture my input when running in Wayland & so I’d really like to go back to X11.

Any ideas?

Hello @frost19k

Well it runs Wayland, not Xorg. That would be Xorg:

 Display: x11 server: X.org v: 1.21.1.8 with: Xwayland v: 23.1.1
    compositor: gnome-shell v: 44.1 driver: X: loaded: modesetting
    alternate: fbdev,vesa dri: virtio_gpu gpu: virtio-pci display-ID: :0
    screens: 1

and it is known that Wayland and Nvidia is not stable.

Apologies, I wasn’t clear.

I was running Xorg. I would prefer to run Xorg. But I have switched over to Wayland for the time being because Wayland isn’t crashing. Wayland is actually proving to be more stable on Nvidia than Xorg!

The journalctl output is from when I was on Xorg.

Well actually Gnome-Shell crashed and not X. Are you sure the Xorg.0.log is current? At least there is no crash visible.

To my knowledge, Gnome doesn’t write any Xorg log in /var/log, but writes it into ~/.local/share/xorg/, since gnome-shell runs as user. GDM writes it into the journal, since it runs as root.

Please share this:

journalctl --boot 0 --grep "\([A-Z]{2}\)"
cat ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log

Well actually Gnome-Shell crashed and not X

Oh!

I modified the journalctl command you asked for, since the current boot hasn’t crashed & so there’s nothing in there…

❯ journalctl --boot 0 --grep "\([A-Z]{2}\)"
Jul 16 08:57:53 manjaro-ws NetworkManager[740]: <info> [1689478073.1209] device (wlp5s0): driver supports Access Point (AP) mode

Journal from previous boot.
Journal from boot before previous.
Xorg log from ~/.local/share.

P.S. Heading out for a bit. I’ll check your response when I get home in the evening.

No problem, but as you see also. X has zero problems. There are no problems either in gdm or in gnome-shell.

So the issue must be something specific related to the gnome-shell. An extension or modification? You would know it better. To exclude that, disable all extensions and use a clean new account for testing.

About that a short note: Xorg handles inputs indirectly, through the server, but on wayland programs which capture input devices cannot ask the server like on xorg, they need direct access. You could try to add yourself to the input group. That helped with virt-manager and ShadowPC at least. Maybe that helps you also? :man_shrugging:

sudo usermod -aG input $USER
# re-login

And maybe also:

echo 'KERNEL=="uinput", MODE="0660", GROUP="input"' | sudo tee /etc/udev/rules.d/65-uinput.rules
reboot

I’m going to join in here because I think we might have much the same problem. I’m running Manjaro Cinnamon with all updates. I was just using the built in Intel video, but when I switch the KVM over to one of the other machines for a few hours, I would come back and the monitors would be dead. [F4] would get me to the one line boot screen about checking disk, but could not get to any terminal that would issue a login prompt. Could not use [F1] to get back to desktop either.

This is an I7-gen6 so I thought maybe the onboard video was going bad. Stuck in an NVidia card. Been having the exact same problem for months. I notice it more because I’m in a VM on a Windows machine working on RedDiamond and it can be a day or two before I come back. Sometimes this happens within half an hour.

I have swapped out cables and tried everything. If I have the KVM set to this machine, I can leave for the evening/weekend, come back, wiggle the mouse, and have the monitors leap to life. I have even swapped the video card with another machine running Manjaro using the same NVidia card and not having problems. In defense of that machine though, I’m not toggling over with its KVM because the project using the other machine is currently over.

Is there a log file somewhere (that will survive reboot) that can be checked to see why the monitors went away?

It’s like the power settings detect idle, test for presence of a monitor, don’t find it, and kill the desktop. The monitors aren’t shut down obviously because I can rotate to the initial boot line.

While we have vastly different symptoms, I think we have the same problem.

I want nothing to do with Wayland.

So the issue must be something specific related to the gnome-shell. An extension or modification?

So I turned off all of my extensions, as advised & then I noticed that the functionality provided by gnome-shell-extension-bluetooth-quick-connect has been added to Gnome!!! I suspect this extension is the issue. I haven’t had a crash yet, so fingers crossed.

Wrt. VMWare on Wayland - Manjaro already put me in the input group. So that wasn’t the issue.
About the udev rule, should the string be more like 'KERNEL=="uinput", MODE="0660", GROUP="input"'? In yours the quote isn’t terminated…

You are right, I forgot it. Corrected above.

Well, it is good that there is an issue, but preferable would be seeing what happens before it crashes… So what causes the crash?

See this:

I have Firefox running with two tabs. One’s this forum & the other is Reddit. I also have a terminal running with btop. That’s about it from the user side (at least when the last crash occured).

Crashes seem to be more frequent when the GPU load is high-ish. Watching videos on YouTube or running VMs makes it crash multiple times.

See this:

Are you referring to this lne The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.?
I’m really sorry, but I don’t know what to make of that :yum:

In simple words: A program sends an unknown request code to the xserver which let it crash immediately. A request could such like “Create Window” or “Copy to clipboard”, but in your case it is unknown.

As you see here OPCode 128-255 are reserved for extensions of xorg and are non-standardized (every driver can do its own stuff here). Now you should know which extension commonly use 147, it could be also one of the nvidia extensions.

It’s caffeine that’s causing the crash. Specifically disabling caffeine (once activated).

My current solution is to simply not use caffeine, so if anyone has a better solution I’m all ears.

I suggest the Caffeine GNOME Shell extension.
