Gnome session does not resume after sleep

Hi there,
all open applications in a gnome session (example: browser + email + editor + file manager and so on) do not come back after a cycle of sleep/resume. What I experience:

  1. put the system on sleep
  2. I wake it up with mouse (or power button)
  3. I see a garbaged graphic screen (sort of old TV screen no signal noise)
  4. after a few sec gdm come up with “lock screen”
  5. I login, but session is lost

Suggestions/ideas how to solve it?

Thanks!

Hi,
a step forward. If I login using X11 instead of wayland, suspend/resume cycle works. Suspend meaning suspend to RAM, I’m not yet looking at hybernation.

What is the problem with wayland? Any “fancy” setting to try?

Thx

As it’s working with X11, I agree wayland is to blame.

Anyway, you have probably not enough RAM to safely suspend to RAM.

Hi Wollie, thanks for replying. It just installed 8GB more, now I’ve about 12GB. I tried again with wayland, no luck. On the same iMac I also have the last MX Linux with KDE Plasma installed. Suspend also works there (I understand Kwin sits on top of X11).
Do I need to give up with gnome45+wayland ?

I can’t say.

Why not first trying to install the amdgpu driver for the AMD Whistler graphics card?

Hi, ArchWiki says that my card (computer is an iMac mid 2011) is not supported by AMDGPU. The driver supports architecture Southern Islands onwards, my radeon card architecture is older (Terascale-2/Northern Island) List of AMD graphics processing units - Wikipedia

I looked (a little) via google, not finding much … only the war between pro vs against for wayland … interesting readings though!!!
