Gnome randomly freezes

Hi everyone, I recently bought a new laptop and installed windows on an SSD and Manjaro Gnome on the other one. The fact is that since the beginning Manjaro, after a while, freezes. The weird thing is that the two external monitors are completely stuck, while the main one keeps working, more or less. I can move the mouse and open some apps. If I try to poweroff, reboot or do something like this it gets completely stuck and I can’t do anything but force-shutdown it with the power button. I already tried changing the kernel and using Wayland and X11 and it still happens. I have an Nvidia 4070 and a 14th gen intel, 32GB of RAM. I saw somewhere that a guy had a similar problem and it was related to the swap memory, but in his case the computer got unstuck after few seconds but that doesn’t happen in my case. I created a swap partition during the installation, so maybe it could be related but I don’t really know

I had a similar experience. Mine was related to extensions. The closer I get to vanilla Gnome the better Gnome performs.

I have some preinstalled extensions active and some that I added. I wonder which one is guilty. Do you have any idea?

In my case, tested in a laptop and a desktop PC, the extensions causing issues were:

  • Quick Settings Audio Devices Hider
  • Quick Settings Audio Devices Renamer
  • Quick Settings Audio Panel

Im still using without any problems:

  • Easy Docker Containers
  • EasyEffects Preset Selector
  • Hibernate Status Button
  • HeadsetControl

Its a pity because I came to love Quick Settings Audio extensions, they are wonderful! but they dont perform well.
I’d advise you to try, disabling all extensions manually and test your desktop. If everything is ok, start enabling one at a time until you find the culprit

I also have Quick Settings Audio, it would be a real shame if it were its fault :frowning: Thank you for your help anyway, I’ll test it without it disabled and tell you.

Try this next time:

ALT + F2 → type r (or restart) → ENTER

It will restart the gnome session.

I will try if it happens again, thank you

Sooo it really looks like Quick Settings Audio PAnel extension was the problem. I was using my PC without it with no problem and like one minute after I activated it it got stuck again. I tried restarting gnome shell but apparently only one of the two external displays got unstuck (???). I also tried the windows command, maybe it’ll help. Thank you guys, I think I’ll try a bit more with the extension enabled and if it still does like this I will remove it
