GNOME:CPU soon becomes very hot and it uses RAM much

I choose GNOME due to its better high-DPI support than KDE Plasma, but after I opened my laptop for about 30min, the temperature of my CPU soars to 66 degree centigrade and my RAM became used 3269MB/7881MB based on screenfetch. I was just using wechat, System Settings and Firefox, no pycharm or other big softwares running. I wonder if printscreen uses much CPU and RAM.

PS:I am using Surface Pro 6 which has 8GB RAM and no fan.

What extensions are you using? Can you test if the issue happens also without any extensions?

Applications Menu
Arc Menu
Dash to Dock
GSConnect
KStatusNotifierItem/AppIndicator Support
User Themes

Maybe it’s touchscreen’s fault?

Did you try to launch System Monitor in order to find what programs use much RAM and CPU ?

You can use htop or bashtop to easily check what processes are using the most cpu. Then, I would suggest trying to disable the extensions to see if it is one of them.

I had a similar issue which I resolved by removing a tray manager I had previously installed. gnome-shell went from using about 75% on one core to 6-8% when idle.

What tray manager? Is it pre-installed in Manjaro GNOME?

Can you please give us some tangible information like:

ps aux | sort --numeric-sort --reverse --key=3,3 | head --lines=10
sensors
free --human
inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host

the first three just after cold booting and then again when the issue is happening, please?

:innocent:

Have you checked if the air is flowing correctly out of your laptop?

I’ve had some laptops with heat problems and it was all dust blocking the airflow.

  1. You don’t have a heating problem when you measured things: after has just a few degrees different than before and 45°C is way below the critical temperature…
  2. You do have a problem with WeChat though, so I’d say: uninstall it from your computer and keep your phone next to your computer and raise a ticket at the developer that they should bring out a native Linux client. All serious companies have one…

Sorry to be the harbinger of bad news but this is the usage of telegram on my desktop (<1%)
