Gnome 40 Release - Manjaro Timeline

Forgive me for sounding like a newb, but how did you get installed?

I don’t use Manjaro, but in regular Arch I could just add the Gnome Unstable repository to the top of /etc/pacman.conf

[gnome-unstable] Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

I would test it out in a VM in case Manjaro do things differently via their own repos. The Manjaro wiki mentions switching branches.

Just switch branch to unstable and update the system: Switching Branches - Manjaro

Gnome 40 in the stable branch for middle May, is it possible ? Or must we have to wait until June ?
I know some extensions are not always ready for Gnome 40 (Dash to Dock, Dash to Panel, …).

I’m on the stable Manjaro branch, and I’m wondering why I keep getting this pacman warning lately:

warning: gnome-initial-setup: local (40.0-1) is newer than community (3.38.4-2)

I go to look for any info on that ā€œcommunityā€ version, and first I find the upstream Arch packages website — uh oh, I’m not allowed to add links to this post, so forgive me for not including them — which is at 40.1-1, and as best I can determine, maybe the Manjaro equivalent of that ā€œpackagesā€ website is [discover dot manjaro dot org slash packages slash gnome-initial-setup], and it says it is even older than my warning message says, 3.34.3-1.

Of course, the pamac GUI merely indicates 40.0-1, so I am baffled.

This is no good as manjaro uses it’s own repositories.
stable branch should be at the version you’re seeing: Packages

If you want Gnome 40, the go to the testing branch. Manjaro is trying to keep the glitches to a minimum as many users are using this for their daily tasks. If stability is not as important then be a tester. Gnome in Manjaro is already beautiful, but not nearly as stable as Manjaro KDE and is easy to break. They are trying to get this right so either be patient and wait for those that are putting their systems at risk to test or be a tester but don’t try to rush what can’t be rushed as they don’t know when it will be ready, but they are trying to get it out as soon as they can.

I think you mean unstable.

That is strange. When I run pacman-mirrors --api --get-branch in the terminal, it returns ā€œstableā€ and I’ve never switched branches. I wonder how I got the unstable version of the package.

So that branch compare page is the true equivalent of the packages listing on the Arch site then?

Oh my … my borking things in Plasma too easily is why I stopped using Plasma. Now I’m scared LOL.

We had to downgrade initial-setup for gnome 3.38 shell. You can even uninstall that package, as it is only needed once.

Well perhaps it’s my personal experience as I am running a 2013 MacBook Pro Retina 15ā€. Maybe Gnome is particularly unstable on what I’m running it on. It works fine for a time but inevitably it will break and it will start acting up or it won’t boot into the GUI. However KDE is almost completely rocksolid on that same machine.

Hi,

does Gnome shell 40 will be included in Manjaro 21.0.5 ? The wait seems long to me, I would like to switch my system completely to Gnome 40 but in a stable manner. Is there a ray of hope to see Manjaro Gnome with full Gnome 40 desktop soon ?

Thanks.

Regards.

Gnome 40 is targeted for the next release. The pieces are now in place in unstable branch, but we still need to figure out a way to update old installations in a manner that transiotions them to the new layout or preserves the users previous workflow. If it was only new installations we need to worry about, we could do the release this week. But because it is not, it might take longer. I’m hoping for a release within this month though.

@Chrysostomus: Thank you for your reply. It is good to have news.

I installed the Gnome-next Manjaro iso last week and I made the new updates today. The system looks good work with Gnome shell 40. I installed the ā€˜dash to dock’ extension from source code here. But I encountered a little bug (maximum size slider is bugging), otherwise the ā€˜dash to dock’ extension for Gnome 40 from Ewlsh works for me. I know that fork isn’t perfect yet, but it does the job. Others extensions I used on Gnome 3.38 are ported to Gnome 40 but only two are missing : ā€œApplications Overview Tooltipā€ (Gnome 40 version in progress)
and ā€œImproved Onscreen Keyboardā€ (enabled for Gnome 40 but parameter options don’t work under Gnome 40 (works very well under Gnome 3.38) and the project seems abandoned now). :frowning:

Gnome 40 is a little different of Gnome 3.38 and some habits must be adapted.

Regards.

Hi,

As I see the Gnome shell version is 40.1 in Gnome Manjaro development iso. :slightly_smiling_face:

ā€˜Dash to panel’ extension seems to be compatible with Gnome 40 now and ā€˜Dash to dock’ extension is compatible with Gnome 40 but still in progress development from the link I gave above.

Any update here? Saw a release today with still no Gnome 40 update. Are we still waiting on Dash to Dock and other extensions to fully support Gnome 40 at this point?

Thanks again to everyone for your time and help, it is greatly appreciated!

We were so close to ship it with today’s update, but decided last minute against it. You can still get it via our Daily Builds and give it a try. Great additions were added to it, though.

Support is sufficient at this point. We already have working testing builds and are soon moving to stable.
