"Ghost Monitor" and Not Able to Connect To Second Screen

I was poking around with Howdy trying to get that to work and I needed to sign out. When I came to the login screen my second screen displayed no signal. I went into display settings and it showed this device “DP-2” with only a few display modes that weren’t the same as my second display. I deleted KDE configs, there’s no Xorg configs.

My Laptop screen is listed as “eDP-1”. I connect my second display with HDMI; there’s no displayports on this laptop.

DP-2, so the Monitor has no EDID which Linux can read. That is generally needed so that Linux can read what resolutions the monitor is capable of. At the moment, it is stuck to the bare defaults.

As you can see, the size is not known and Linux calculate the resolution based on the size of the screen, which is in the EDID:

But the thing is, nothing changes when I plug in or unplug the monitor. When the monitor gets power from the HDMI cable it cycles through it’s inputs and gets no signal, and nothing in xrandr changes. Also like I said it was working before. If I try to delete DP-2 it throws the error “BadValue”.

It fixed itself I guess? I just checked for the hell of it and that other monitor (that I called the “Ghost Monitor”) was gone. I plugged in the other monitor again and it worked.

Super weird. Maybe just a bunch of reboots (I’ve been screwing around with PAM stuff) with the monitor disconnected cleared a config file or something.

Happened again randomly when I rebooted. I restarted with the monitor unplugged and it fixed it. Still weird, still don’t know how to fix it

I would guess that this is a timing issue. It could very well be that the initialization is not waiting long enough for the monitor. But that’s just a guess.

Anything useful in the logs?

Doesn’t look like anything useful is there. However it hasn’t happened in a bit but if/when it does I’ll check to see if anything changes here. It does sound like a timing issue though.
