General issues with Steam: games (both native and Proton) won't run properly, or at all

Hello,

I know little about how Manjaro and Steam manage to make games run smoothly; however, on one of my laptops (ASUS Zenbook, with no GPU), games that should work, don’t. Specifically:

  • some native games (for example Superliminal) won’t launch at all;
  • some games, that should (according to other users on ProtonDB) work with minimal tweaks (like STRAFTAT, which is reported to work with only Proton 9 or Experimental, and no launch options — extremely lightweight game with simple graphics) only work with a lot of launch options and patches, and still run pretty bad (for STRAFTAT, I need to put: DXVK_ASYNC=1 PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 gamemoderun mangohud %command%).

Tell me if more info is needed. Thanks!

This kernel is still hanging on in the Stable branch but is EOL.
We may expect it to be removed from the repos with the next Stable update.
So now is the time to install/test/use 6.12 or revert to 6.6 and remove 6.11.

I dont know much about gnome but whenever its being used one of the main points of breakage is often extensions. So if you use any … it may be worth some time investigating your system status with them disabled.

There are multiple BIOS updates for this machine including some marked ‘critical’ for security and performance.

If my search was correct;
https://www.asus.com/us/supportonly/ux3402za/helpdesk_bios/

And this when you are not gaming?
Your memory is quite taxed and close to full.

Furthermore I note that your setup consists of 8 separate 2gb sticks.

We may also note that these appear to be ECC RAM with intermediary controller chips.

( run again with sudo and we will be more sure )

It would appear SWAP is not exactly empty either.

Your cpu is set to powersave and all the cores are stuck on 400mhz.
Is this intentional or expected at the time of the inxi?

I tried upgrading to 6.12; I could, but I can’t remove linux611 because of the linux-meta package, that is stuck to linux611:

> pamac remove linux611
Error: Failed to prepare transaction:
could not satisfy dependencies:
- removing linux611 breaks dependency 'linux611' required by linux-meta

For the BIOS update, I’ll need more help; the version number in my BIOS and on the official website you provided a link to match (310), so I’m not sure what I should do, what is update and what is what I already have…

Yes, that was after numerous attempts to lauch games; after a reboot only 2 to 3GiB are in use. The same goes for SWAP.

I simply put it into performance mode for the time being.

In the end: I made the little changes I could do myself, as decribed above, and didn’t do the changes I wasn’t sure how to properly do; after rebooting and updating, I get the same results (see original post, specifically the behaviour for the games Superliminal and STRAFTAT). Thanks for your help so far

From the info provided and the steps taken so far there does not seem to be a single point to fix. The linux-meta and upgrade to a supported kernel issue has been seen on the forum, that should be fixed first.

From the Announcements thread:

Since we got several reports about issues around linux69 removal we created meta packages called linux-meta and packages for the extramodules. It will detect end of life Kernels and replace them with the current recommended kernel. For now with linux610 series. Please report back if you have any issues with this provided solution.

Does the article below help you get some more info / check for steps to take to resolve

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Steam/Troubleshooting

Starting steam from a terminal and following the output can be a good source for config or other issues. There are some errors in this list that can be ignored others might prove useful to search for.

I did. Now I’m running the 6.12 kernel, and I have removed the 6.11.

I did; when I launch Steam, the last lines read:

vkCreateInstance failed with error -9
BInit - Unable to initialize Vulkan!

After reinstalling every vulkan-related package, when I run vulkaninfo, I get:

ERROR: [Loader Message] Code 0 : loader_scanned_icd_add: Could not get 'vkCreateInstance' via 'vk_icdGetInstanceProcAddr' for ICD libGLX_nvidia.so.0
WARNING: [Loader Message] Code 0 : Layer VK_LAYER_AMD_switchable_graphics_64 uses API version 1.3 which is older than the application specified API version of 1.4. May cause issues.
WARNING: [Loader Message] Code 0 : Layer VK_LAYER_AMD_switchable_graphics_32 uses API version 1.3 which is older than the application specified API version of 1.4. May cause issues.

ERROR: [Loader Message] Code 0 : terminator_CreateInstance: Found no drivers!
Cannot create Vulkan instance.
This problem is often caused by a faulty installation of the Vulkan driver or attempting to use a GPU that does not support Vulkan.
ERROR at /usr/src/debug/vulkan-tools/Vulkan-Tools-1.4.303/vulkaninfo/./vulkaninfo.h:456:vkCreateInstance failed with ERROR_INCOMPATIBLE_DRIVER

I ran mhwd -li, and there was no pci or usb drivers, so I ran sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300. It ran for some time, then told me video-linux was now installed, and lo and behold, now the Vulkan errors were gone, and Superliminal launched properly. Then I tried STRAFTAT and it also works with just Proton Experimental and no launch options now.

Thanks for your help!
