GDM starts but does not respond

System unusable gui after upgrade. Upgrade seemed to go without a hitch, but on reboot, gdm starts but does not respond to either mouse or keyboard. Running startx from a user login leads to similar: gnome-shell starts but is unresponsive. It may be that the gui is freezing or hung before it completes startup: what appears on screen isn’t quite complete. I’ve no idea how to troubleshoot from here.

I was able to get an openbox session working by text login on vt, then startx. That much seems fine, just gnome that’s borked

Scanning the session logs with journalctl _UID=1000, the only obvious glitch is

Feb 07 11:44:43 opti gnome-shell[13908]: Could not load extension ding@rastersoft.com: Error: Missing metadata.json
  Stack trace: ...

A missing extension doesn’t seem like a big deal, but triggering a stack trace? That is the last log entry for gnome-shell, but it doesn’t exit/restart. If I kill gnome-shell, systemd restarts it, leading to the same (lack of) behavior.

I haven’t found any info about ‘ding@rastersoft’ that I could try installing/re-installing.

TIA for any suggestions.

ETA:
Found out ‘ding’ is for desktop icons.
Looks like a goose chase: the same problem was in logs before the update when things were working. No idea where to go from here.

Update and reboot seemed to go smoothly, but xdm freezes up part way through drawing the screen, and is completely unresponsive to mouse clicks or keyboard input.

I posted about the issue on the last stable updates topic, here: [Stable Update] 2025-02-04 - Kernels, KDE, XFCE, Mesa, Cosmic, Systemd - #96
Same problem after latest updates.
TIA for any suggestions.
