GDM fails after update black screen blinking cursor

Hello, after updating Manjaro today, after booting I have black screen and blinking cursor.

I go to console with control alt F3 and journalctl -u gdm says:

Gdm: GdmDisplay: Session never registered, failing

systemctl restart gdm does not help.

systemctl restart systemd-logind does not help.

mkinitcpio -P and reboot does not help.

In journal, I find

Failed to start unit gnome-session-x11@gnome.target: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.systemd1.NoSuchUnit: Unit gnome-session-x11@gnome.target not found.

How to restore GDM?

Switching to Wayland by tweaking /etc/gdm/custom.conf, GDM starts but I don’t want Wayland because it breaks many things.

In /var/log/pacman.log I see that Gnome was updated to version 49. I see on the web a dispute about the Gnome 49 and X11, U Turn! X11 is Back in GNOME 49, For Now.

OK I will try Wayland to see if has improved.

GNOME 49 packages are not built with X11 support. Downstream packagers have been asked by upstream not to include it as it will be completely removed in GNOME 50. See:

@Yochanan at least this ISO defaults to X11 in GDM. So we have to discuss on how to migrate 25.0 installs to wayland: Release 202509291348 · manjaro/release-review · GitHub

The issue is now tracked upstream: GDM 49.x segfaults with WaylandEnable=false. As a temp workaround I removed the value from /etc/gdm/custom.conf completely as gnome-layout-switcher and some other “script/function” may enable it when available in that file: [pkg-upd] 49.1-1.1 (8cf82bd1) · Commits · Packages / extra / gdm · GitLab
