I have been using Manjaro on an HP laptop for a few years now and even played a few lower resource hungry games (Portal 2, Lost Ember etc.). I have checked on protondb and 90% of my games are gold and 10% being platinum. My main question is in regards to modding games, I have Fallout 4 and Skyrim both pretty heavily modded on my Windows 10 gaming PC. Given Microsoft’s EOL for Windows 10 is October of this year I won’t to switch over to Manjaro on my gaming rig. Anyone have experience modding games on Manjaro (or linux in general)?
Note that the Support category is better suited to addressing specific issues, rather than a general plea for attention.
If you do have a specific issue that might be actionable by those wishing to help, please edit your post with the specifics.
I’ll just add that considering Windows games are still largely reliant on a Windows environment (i.e. WINE) when used in Linux, you will likely find any modding will be second nature after you have learned how to use WINE-based tools effectively.
Regards.

I’ve had mixed results depending on the game and how it accepts mods.
The Bethesda stuff tends to be very drag’n’drop with .bsa(I think) files and some asset folders, so you can download and just drop those in the relevant folder. I don’t have them installed atm to check but I know I’ve played modded FO4 and Skyrim without issue. To the point degree that I just take a copy of the entire installed mods/dlcs folder and paste it back when I reinstall the games and it still worked after they were re-enabled via. the in-game tickboxes.
Some other games require a 3rd party mod manager to easily mod the games, that’s the potential miss. The nexus tool doesn’t play well for me, I think there’s a version in the AUR but I didn’t feel like testing it.
The biggest issue I had was a mod pack for World of Warships, never managed to get it working and I couldn’t manually install those mods like voice packs.
For some other games there are 3rd party tools that may or may not work depending on your system, Eve Online has a tool to monitor dps in fights…my mate can use it running real time, I have to copy log files and get the tool to review those after the fact. Probably due to security and permissions settings I use and he doesn’t but that’s the kind of thing you’ll deal with a lot.
The biggest hurdle is where you need to run some program at the same time the game is running in a wine instance, things like trainer programs. I’d say 1/10 times you’ll be able to launch and use it.
Thanks, I am still researching all the modding methods for my various games, but the ones I regularly mod appear to support the “drag and drop” method.
Playing with Linux is fine. Most of the time I just use the steam client or the heroic game launcher (epic and gog).
On rare occasions I use wine/winetricks manually. mod manager should be fine if you run it in the same wine/proton prefix as the game. Things like melonlauncher will run if you tell wine to use version.dll natively for example ( WINEDLLOVERRIDES=“version=n,b”)
The only problems are some games with anticheat.
And as always…Google is your friend ![]()
No experience of Skyrim and Fallout 4 but I do have 100’s of hours in modded Fallout New Vegas using Mod Organizer 2 on Linux with no problems.
Simple drag and drop modding should just work.
Exe patchers and installers like Mod Organizer 2 are more complicated, you need to run them with the correct version of proton in the correct wine prefix for the game, and you may need to install dependencies in that prefix using protontricks. It’s possible to do all this manually if you know what you’re doing (there are guides out there on the interwebz) but I suggest starting here;
Again, there is no issue specific issue defined that has anything to do with Manajro. For the kind of questions you’re asking there are no doubt many gaming forums that might be better suited; or perhaps;
- The r/ManjaroLinux subreddit.
If you have a specific issue with Manjaro, I’m sure someone can likely help; system information as described (above) and a detailed description of the problem is usually the mimimum required for someone to help.
If an issue is gaming related, or about running games, we encourage you to first check ProtonDB and PCGamingWiki for tips and tricks before asking for help.
If I recall, running some executables in WINE (via commandline, especially) has been disallowed; likely due to the prevalence of applications designed to circumvent game protections; often so-called trainers fall very close.
So, yes, quite a hurdle indeed.
Be aware that discussions of these instances might be borderline to infringing upon Forum Rules.
Just something to keep in mind as you continue using the forum.

Is there a way I can delete the thread?
No, sorry. However, it can be closed and unlisted.
Why do you wish it deleted?
Thanks for the heads up, I’ll just clarify now before anyone gets the ban hammer urge.
When I say ‘trainer’ I’m referring to a legally downloaded program/script used to temporarily perform ‘cheats’ in my legally acquired offline single player games.
Nothing related to theft, copyright issues, network intrusion, malicious code etc.
