Games crash on Steam after 1-5 minutes

This begun happening about two months ago. It doesn’t matter if it is Steam native, runtime or flatpack. Different games crash within a few minutes, sometimes won’t even launch. I tried going back to the LTS kernel, with no results.

Any help is welcome!

Welcome to the Manjaro community

As a new or infrequent forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with Forum requirements, and the many ways to use the forum to your benefit:

Update Announcements

The Update Announcements contain important information and a Known Issues and Solutions section that should generally be checked before posting a request for support.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command with appropriate parameters will achieve this (naturally, formatted according to forum guidelines) and will generally be more useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form:

inxi -zv8

Be prepared to provide output from other commands whenever asked. It’s equally important to provide as much actionable information as possible in your first post, rather than simply indicating there is a problem.

This sounds to me like Nvidia 575xx

test out 550xx Version from the AUR:

nvidia-550xx-dkms 550.163.01-2
nvidia-550xx-utils 550.163.01-2

And get rid of anything of version 575.64.0…

 sudo pacman -Q | grep 575.64.0

But keep:

nvidia-settings 575.64.03-1
opencl-nvidia 575.64.03-1

Maybe try disabling the Steam Overlay under Steam Settings > In Game.

I’m not sure if that’s actually related to the error since the gameoverlayui flag is default, however at least that will rule it out if not.

Highly doubtful. Remember, Gtk 2 is dead. However, for some reason, xfce4-settings depends on gnome-themes-extra and Steam might be looking for a system Gtk 2 theme. :man_shrugging:

How? What do you mean?

Why?

Remember, the AUR is neither officially supported by Arch nor Manjaro.

Also, you’re contradicting yourself. One cannot both “get rid of” and “keep” something at the same time. All driver packages must have matching versions.

Here is the inxi output:

I have tried this a few times, the games still crash.

Thank you! I will try this if nothing else helps.

because 550xx only works for me since:

It was just my suggestion for now.

It’s nice that you use the “reply” functionality, but please, reply to the person you wished to reply to (there is a Reply button beneath each post)…

Please use the correct button for the person you intend replying to (@Yochanan) rather than clicking the first Reply that you happen to see.

Regards.

The replay was to your inxi outpout request that you post, but while I have Post my Post @juancho has already posted he’s System info.

So that part I have deleted.

From the output - I’d say this could become critical.

Your graphics appear to run with the - by Nvidia - recommend driver

Check for dust in the vents - overheating will cause instability - though it does not look like

I’m not sure I understood most of that, but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt.

Well, thank you for your kindness.

From the output - I’d say this could become critical.

You mean, running out of space? Yesterday I did a Steam Flatpak installation in addition to the native package. Once I get a solution I will delete the redundant packages.

The laptop is only six months old and I monitor the temperature.

There is a big Intel problem with dieing or unstable 13th/14th Intel Gen. CPU’s, idk if Laptop CPU’s are effect the same as normal PC CPU’s from Intel.

For that reason, Intel rolled out massive Bios updates that reduced the voltage… to stop or delay the silicon rot.

Im not saying that this is the case here… but it could be related.
After the big medial ■■■■ storm, Intel extended Warrantys for the effected 13th/14th gen to 5 year’s.

But, did you…

1. Which specific games are crashing, and are they all Windows based (do they require WINE)?

2. Are you multi-booting and sharing an NTFS partition between Manjaro and Windows to run those games from?

Not yet.

Only have 3 games installed now: Age of Wonders 4, Galactic Civilizations 3, and No Man’s Sky. They all crash. They all require Wine/Proton.

No. It’s only Manjaro.

In the Stable Update (2025-06-23) announcement, the following item was posted under Known Issues and Solutions:

As your games are using WINE, then any 32-bit prefixes need to be recreated, in any case; I suspect this could be contributing to the crashing, especially considering only these games are affected.

Thank you. The post does not tell how to recreate these prefixes. I appreciate any light on this.

For that illumination you might need to ask Steam (for example). Different versions of WINE may be used, depending on whether it’s Proton, or one of the other variants.

Some random links that might be useful;

Most will likely presume some understanding of WINE, but again, it depends on which WINE the game is running on. You would need to put your researching cap on.

For recreating WINE prefixes on Manjaro, it means deleting any existing 32-bit prefixes, and creating new ones. Familiarity with WINE is an advantage, and there are tools to help, albeit mostly command-line.

Your games are likely not using the system WINE.

Any other 32-bit (Windows) applications that you have previously configured, likely are. Naturally, if you have never configured any 32-bit Windows software to run in WINE on Manjaro, then there won’t be any 32-bit wineprefixes to recreate.

I had it cleaned. The games still crash.

That is the case. I never configured wineprefixes.

I have tried different versions of Proton and disabling Steam overlay. Nothing works…

Have you tried Lutris?

I have never used Lutris and know virtually nothing about it; I notice it mentioned occasionally on the forum as being easy to setup and use. Maybe it’s worth investigating as an alternative to your current environment.
