Games can crash whole system(can't even call ctrl+f2)

When I’m playing games(CIv 6, for example) it has a chance to just freeze. If I like I might be able to close it via ctrl+shift+esc or atleast open ctrl+f2(or was it f3) and initiate reboot, but most of the time I can’t even do that.

I don’t know what the problem is, it isn’t related to the exact game.
Maybe someone had this problem.

inxi -Fza and logs afrer reboot:

I had the same problem with my 8GB RAM: most games froze PC until rebooting it by button only can help. To fix this I needed to simply create swap partition as the RAM was running out. I am still not an expert at reading journalctl, but I can guess you have the same situation by:

  1. Most of the output contains RAM map info;
Swap:
Alert: No swap data was found.

Recommend creating a swap partition with up to 16-20GB on your SSD. To create it these links should help you (but I used them only to activate it as I created it with GParted GUI):

Well… That’s something I guess, thanks.

Although I can’t quite understand why games crash the whole system when they don’t have enough RAM, while in windows they’ll:

  1. Freeze without drugging the system with them
  2. Will have enough RAM in 16gb(At least the games I play).

Maybe it’s somehow related to KDE(only manjaro KDE, among 4 systems I tried) detecting only 14.98 ram out of 16384, while others detect about 15.6-15.8.

I hope someone knows, swap will be a temporary solution for now.

Disclaimer: I can exaggerate something, but this is all how I understand it.

I don’t think System can have RAM for specific types of software. Its more global, so whats going on: game processes take all of the RAM and System tries to handle every one, but it cannot as there is no reserved place for it. So, totally, the System cannot process every call and when it tries to free space even with errors — the game is still creating a new one and may flood it, thus we have the total crash.

Swap space is like additional RAM which is used when the physical one is full or almost there. Why doesn’t this happen on Windows? Well, most recourses have its priority and whatever call it would be — System’s one will always have the highest, so when an app “wants” to take more space — Windows will stop or even kill it to keep its own processes running whatever user runs. Also as far as I know, Windows automatically creates a swap file when the OS is installed and changes its size if needed (by itself). And I don’t say if Microsoft made its own proprietary “smart algorythm” for RAM/swap space usage and etc. Additionally, Windows always wants us not to try dig into it and make everything “great” pre-installed for the common user.

And the only thing I don’t understand — if I am mostly right — is why Manjaro does not create swap at the end of its installation? Or is this like some “trend” in Linux world like “breaking bottle on ship”? As for a user friendly distro this is no actually “friendly” anyway, but thankfully easy fixable.

Windows do the same thing. For example, Windows and Linux both always detect my 8GB RAM as 7.7GB. There is interesting discussion about it on this forum with explanations, but you have already seen it :upside_down_face:

Yeah, I know some part is always reserved, that problem is more about why only manjaro KDE reserver 1.5GB, while others do about 600-800mb.

I know what SWAP is, just didn’t use it yet, cause I never had problems with 16GB on Windows(my old machine, that feature like a Swap was turned off too, although not always). So I didn’t see much use in it. Maybe I just forgot that I did had that last time(different installations) or maybe games with proton eat hell of a lot more RAM.
Also I had no idea that linux cant prioritize itself over some app by default(like windows does) to just crash that app.
Thanks for the memory refreshement
