Fuzzy Screen after Kernel Update

Hello,

if i install a newer Kernel (>5.8.18) my Laptop boots into then following screen:

The Laptop doesnt freeze, so i can use the mouse, log in and can start applications and so on… but my eyes will not forgive me this :-).

Looks like some driver problem or incompatibility but i dont know how to fix it. Maybe someone have some tipps for me?

Im using a Lenovo Laptop with integrated Intel Graphics.

Let me know if you need more informations.

Thanks & Greedings

1 can concerns touchpad if not working

2 can you provide

sudo mhwd-kernel -li

3 add this on boot pci=noaer , in boot line kernel

sudo nano /etc/default/grub
sudo update-grub

4 see this bluetooth may be broken at this time
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=259260

5 can you remove bamfdaemon , add other kernel and try again ?

sudo pacman -Rs bamfdeamon
sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux59

Hi stephane,

so touchpad and bluetooth seems to work with the kernel 5.9.
Here is the output of mhwd-kernel

Currently running: 5.8.18-1-MANJARO (linux58)
The following kernels are installed in your system:
   * linux57
   * linux58
   * linux59

i added the line pci=noaer to the grub file:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="pci=noaer"

pacman can’t find bamfdeamon so i uninstalled the bamf package and plank.

After
sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux59
i rebooted but the changes had no effect. :frowning:

Greedings

so check

pacman -Qs linux57-
pacman -Qs linux58-
pacman -Qs linux59-
sudo pacman -S linux59-headers
sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux54
sudo pacman -S linux54-headers

reboot and try 5.4 LTS version

Hey Stephane,

writing from a working 5.4 Kernel.

And now? Install 5.9 again?

is there on this command in diff number ( by linux version )

you cant remove 5.7 and 5.8 , and keep for future 5.9

sudo mhwd-kernel -r linux57
sudo mhwd-kernel -r linux58
sudo mkinitcpio -P

Sorry i didnt realize that you need the output.

pacman -Qs linux57-
local/linux57-headers 5.7.19-2
Header files and scripts for building modules for Linux57 kernel
local/linux57-virtualbox-host-modules 6.1.16-1 (linux57-extramodules)
    Host kernel modules for VirtualBox

pacman -Qs linux58-
local/linux58-headers 5.8.18-1
Header files and scripts for building modules for Linux58 kernel
local/linux58-virtualbox-host-modules 6.1.16-3 (linux58-extramodules)
    Host kernel modules for VirtualBox

pacman -Qs linux59-
local/linux59-headers 5.9.3-1
Header files and scripts for building modules for Linux59 kernel
local/linux59-virtualbox-host-modules 6.1.16-3 (linux59-extramodules)
    Host kernel modules for VirtualBox

sudo mhwd-kernel -r linux57
sudo mhwd-kernel -r linux58
sudo mkinitcpio -P

i had some depency error bs mhwd-kernel -r linux58 with linux-latest linux-latest-headers and so on. I uninstalled them seperatly and finally i removed the kernel

it’ ok , now you can remove kernels 5.7 and 5.8 ( end of life EOL )

so this is ok in boot 5.4 lts but not in 5.9 ?

so this is ok in boot 5.4 lts but not in 5.9 ?

exactly. 5.4 works fine, 5.9 returns into the “rainbow mode”. Let me know if its the best to reinstall the whole system in your opinion.

no need to reinstall
stay for the moment on 5.4 lts and wait next update

what you can do is this
boot on 5.9 , then on 5.4
and see with terminal ( 2 side by side ) where it goes wrong

sudo journalctl -b -1 ( boot before )
sudo journalctl -b 0 ( current boot )

hmm i think there is really something with this bamfdaemon:

Boot to 5.9 has this entries:

 dbus-daemon[1040]: [session uid=1000 pid=1040] Activating via systemd: service name='org.ayatana.bamf' unit='bamfdaemon.service' requested by ':1.25' (uid=1000 pid=1166 comm="plank " label="unconfined")
systemd[1018]: Starting BAMF Application Matcher Framework...

bamfdaemon[1296]: bamfdaemon: Fatal IO error 11 (Die Ressource ist zur Zeit nicht verfügbar) on X server :0.

On 5.4 its seems to work (so no Fatal IO error)

But… i dont find this service?

sudo systemctl status bamfdaemon.service
Unit bamfdaemon.service could not be found.
