Frozen in 'Preparing...' mode after upgrade

Just did a software upgrade to my Toshiba Satellite C655-S5307 (Intel CORE 13) and now the laptop freezes on ‘Preparing…’ when you ask the software install/upgrade program to do anything. You cannot ‘x’ out of the software install/upgrade program, you cannot quit it using right-click, the program just freezes in a permanent ‘Preparing…’ posture with elevated CPU/fan acceleration noises, but when you go into System Monitor it shows elevated CPU usage (30-50% for all 3 CPUs) but no processes are associated with the elevated CPU/fan activity; just freezes with elevated sound from the fan/CPU. Is there some way to uninstall the recent upgrade or to see what is freezing the laptop? You can still do stuff on the internet, but the only way to close the software install/upgrade program is to power off the laptop. Thanks.

And what will happen if you do

sudo pacman-mirrors -f && sudo pacman -Syu

??

“there is nothing to do” at the end of the process. Says it is current.

The next thing will be to disable AUR if enabled

sudo sed -Ei '/CheckAURUpdates/s/^/#/' /etc/pamac.conf

Try to open it. If it is still stuck the next will be to delete the cache. The process btw, if you have to kill it is

killall pamac-manager

Thanks for your help. Killing the process terminates the install freeze, but if you try again to install anything the freeze reignites. Am wondering if there is just some weird death-spiral between the CPUs and the software; not sure what else to think. Thanks again for your help. Is there a way to uninstall and reinstall everything via the terminal ?

Maybe something is stuck in the cache…
I have seen this once but i cannot remember exactly…i thought it was aur connected.

If you want you can try to clean the caches. Nuke everything inside:
/var/cache/pacman/pkg/
/var/cache/pamac/

Thanks. Nuked the pkg but still stalls. Thanks again for your help. Will wait and see for the time being.

What happens when you use pamac on the command line? For example:

pamac update

or

pamac install <the-package-name>

with pamac update it said nothing to do and the installer still stalls. Thinking about upgrading my laptop; it’s about time. Thanks.

I don’t think that would be the cause of the issue.

Try opening a terminal and running the command pamac-manager. Do any messages appear in the terminal before or when pamac-manager freezes? Please copy & paste any messages that appear into this topic.

Another possibility could be the polkit issue that has occurred on systems running older kernels after a recent update. Maybe pamac-manager, which relies on polkit when asking for your password, is locking up due to the authorisation not completing.

Could you please confirm your running kernel by posting the output of:

uname -r

More detailed system info could also be very helpful. Please provide the output of:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form (preferred):

inxi -zv8
Running `inxi` in `chroot`

Note that any code or command output (such as inxi output) should be placed within a scrollable pre-formatted text enclosure according to forum guidelines.

See here for instructions:

[MiniHowTo] Present code or command output

Note: Grave accent (or, backtick) characters are used. :eyes:

For inline code or to show a single command:

  • for example, typing: `code here` will display the text as code here.

For multi-line command output:

  • place text beween two rows of three (```) backtick characters to form a scrollable text box, or …
  • use the </> button in the Compose window to achieve the same result.

The empty row between these rows of backtick characters is where to paste any multi-line command output (such as inxi).

An example of a pre-formatted text enclosure:

What is a Quark?

A. In Physics, an elementary particle and fundamental constituent of matter.
B. A character from the Star Trek: "Deep Space Nine" television series.
C. A soft, creamy, usually unsalted cheese traditional to central Europe.

Is there any specific reason why you are running such an old kernel?

Anyway, to eliminate polkit as being the cause of the issue please try switching to kernel 6.6 or later. You have 3 LTS kernels currently available that will work with the polkit changes.

To install kernel 6.6:

sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux66

or kernel 6.12:

sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux612

or the recently LTS-listed kernel 6.18:

sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux618

After the new kernel is installed, reboot and see if pamac-manager now works.

Note that this issue was covered in the " Known issues and solutions" section of the most recent update announcement:

Also, your inxi output is unreadable due to it not being formatted as code. Please click the :pen: icon at the bottom of the post and edit it according to these instructions:
