From yesterday wont work the nvidia card in my laptop

Yesterday I did the rolling updates in my system.
Now, the laptop cannot switch from the intel hybrid gpu to the dedicated nvidia gpu.

Please help me to solve this issue.
Let me know what information needs to this.
Thanks in advance.

:+1: Welcome to Manjaro! :+1:

  1. Please read this:
    How to provide good information
and post some more information so we can see what’s really going on. Now we know the symptom of the disease, but we need some more probing to know where the origin lies…
  2. An inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width would be the minimum required information… (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)
Also, please copy-paste that output in-between 3 backticks ``` at the beginning and end of the code/text.

:+1:

P.S. If you enter a bit more details in your profile, we can also see which Desktop Environment you’re using, which CPU/GPU or Kernel, … you have without typing it every time

Try to load kernel 5.4 LTS and see if that makes a difference.

Please provide the output of:

mhwd --listinstalled

I sacrificed my ssd drive and installed a brand new system on that. Here is the required information. So, I would start from the scratch and use this machine with only nVidia card usage, if it is possible. My Desktop Environment is: Cinnamon.

  1. I’m confused: Are you saying:

    • you wiped your system and started from scratch?
    • you have 2 Manjaros in dual boot now?
    • something else entirely?
  2. Did you try this yet? If you don’t know how to do that, shout out.

Sorry for confusing you. Yes, I do have two drives HDD + SSD.
On the HDD takes place that system that worked until last week. I leaved that and installed a brand new system on the SSD.
Unfortunately I did a mistake and the new install was made with encryption.
After the install, I can’t load the old system, that is a new issue.
So, now I am in a bad situation, and I don’t continue this while the other issue exists (the boot problem).

So I would install a system that uses only the dedicated GPU.
Could you help me?

I don’t understand what the status of your system is, so I can’t help you and why I posted a:

:sob:

under your last post…

My status is not so good, but I am ready to install a system. Have a laptop, have a SSD and a fresh system.

If you’re starting from scratch, you should follow this wiki article:

https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php?title=Configure_NVIDIA_(non-free)_settings_and_load_them_on_Startup

But

you should be aware that some manufacturers don’t wire up the dGPU to the internal laptop screen to cut costs resulting in it only being available on the HDMI port. (I.E. External screen)
Furthermore, I’m unfamiliar with your hardware, but you might be lucky that you can run the dGPU on both the internal and external screen.

If not, you’ll have to continue using a hybrid driver instead of running full nVidia (Which is the way I’m running)

The output to mhwd --listinstalled on my system is:

Installed PCI configs:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  NAME VERSION FREEDRIVER TYPE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
          video-nvidia 2020.11.30 false PCI

:crossed_fingers:

Thanks i am going to check these today.

My system is able to use the HDMI port, I am using an external monitor, right now.
This laptop has the hardware Optimus configuration. So it has an integrated and a dedicated GPU too.

Before three weeks I used the optimus-manager to switch between the two operating modes.
Unfortunately, as i mentioned in the opening post, the rolling upgrade somehow went wrong.
I don’t know how and why, because I did that on the regular way. Now, the switching doesn’t work.
This is the reason why I would install a new system that only uses the dGPU, so don’t need to switch.

In my system:

mhwd --listinstalled
> Installed PCI configs:

                  NAME VERSION FREEDRIVER TYPE

  • Print this page so you have it as a reference while in TTY2

  • Log off

  • Switch to TTY2 by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2

  • Log in there

  • Execute:

    sudo mhwd-kernel --install linux510
    sudo mhwd --install pci video-linux

  • to ensure grub is showing, execute:

    sudo nano --backup /etc/default/grub

  • Change (or add?) the following 3 lines:

    GRUB_TIMEOUT=3
    #GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
    #GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden

(3 or higher is fine, add the # before the lines above if those lines are present)

  • Ctrl+X Y Enter to save if there is anything to save

  • If you did save, execute:

    sudo update-grub

  • Reboot

  • Go to grub’s Advanced options

  • Choose these kernels one by one and try them out one by one and see if that helps.

:+1:

P.S. If you would get a black screen when doing this, go back to the top and change video-nvidia to video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime because your manufacturer:

I don’t understand. What does it mean?

I’ll explain in depth if and when it happens, so try video-nvidia first.

:innocent:

sudo mhwd --remove video-linux
Error: invalid use of option: -r/--remove

Something went wrong…

urgh: copy-paste error (Edited in original answer too)

sudo mhwd --remove pci video-linux
sudo mhwd --install pci video-nvidea
Error: config 'video-nvidea' does not exist!

Alternate take:

sudo mhwd --install pci video-nvidia
Error: config 'video-nvidia' does not exist!

How should continue?
