Fresh installation of Manjaro Xfce (Kernel 6.1, recent official ISO) mostly does not boot

Hi folks :slightly_smiling_face:,

After I did a fresh install of Manjaro (Sikaris) Xfce a few days ago due to renewal and restructuring of my SSDs, it gets stuck at the new Manjaro boot screen almost every time (see attachment). however the dots continue moving but nothing else happens. Sometimes a warm boot with Ctrl + Alt + Del helps.
I used the latest ISO from the Manjaro website. The installation itself worked smoothly, as I am used to from Manjaro, the UEFI is configured correctly, as well as the controllers of the SSDs.
Although this machine is a desktop PC, I performed the installation with LUKS full encryption. The first reboot after the installation worked as usual, on subsequent boots it did not continue booting or at least starting the Display Manager.

The problem does not occur when LUKS encryption is not installed, nor did it occur when I upgraded normally from previous installations. Also, only kernel 6.1 seems to be affected, with kernel 5.15 the system boots normally.
This machnie also has Windows 11 installed on a separate SSD, which I only sometimes use for testing purposes. Grub recognizes the Windows system and creates a menu entry accordingly, but that probably shouldn’t matter, it’s been that way since I started using this computer.

The mashine’s specs:

Hi @LinKostik,

Do you know how to chroot? Because I think getting logs from there would be splendid.

Yes, I know how chroot works, however, the affected system just started correctly for once. What logs do you need exactly?

Cool. So provide the output of:

journalctl --priority=4 --boot-1 --no-pager

Where:

  • --priority=4 limits the output to warning and errors only;
  • --boot=-1 limits the messages to the previous boot. Feel free to adjust this as necessary:
    -1 for the previous boot, -2 for the one before that, -3 for the one before that, and so on and so forth. Limit the messages to a failed boot please;
  • --no-pager provides output in a suitable format for providing here, on the forums.

If there is a problem, this command can also be run from within the chroot environment.

While I really don’t know if it’ll be me that van help, the info would be necessary for anyone trying to help.

Edit:

P.S.: Sounds like a failing drive, or even faulty RAM to me…

Once the system is started, it apparently runs flawlessly. Likewise, the Windows tinkering and test installation on the separate SSD works without crashing. Likewise, the error does not occur when installing without LUKS or when booting with kernel 5.15. Quite strange. Here is the output:

Thanks for this!

I believe I read somewhere that LUKS and the kernel 6.x series is problematic, gives errors. And this would seem to confirm it.

I don’t know what the cause or the solution is, if any, since I don’t use LUKS.

Makes me love my ext4 partition all the more.

I also assume that this has to do with the LUKS encryption. Anyway, the machine is a desktop computer and my notebooks have Manjaro and Arch installed for a long time, so the problem does not occur there, despite LUKS, precisely because of the earlier installation with older kernel. As reported, it works there even after upgrade. I think I will just re-install the affected system without LUKS. Thank you for your help!!
