Fresh install hangs indefinitely on loading screen

Just did a fresh Manjaro Xfce install (latest release) on a Lenovo Thinkpad P15v Gen3. Secure boot disabled. Proprietary drivers on install. I’m getting to the GRUB menu and selecting the OS to boot from, but it’s hanging indefinitely on the loading screen with the three dots. 32 GB swap partition and LUKS encryption on root which is new for me and is apparently keeping me from chrooting in from a live USB. I have a hunch this is an Nvidia driver problem as usual but it’s been a few years since I had the pleasure of owning laptop with Nvidia graphics… Kinda stumped as to what I should do now. Any pointers appreciated.

I am sorry to hear that - it sounds strange - since your installation would boot.

Please see this topic for instructions on how to unlock your partition

[root tip] [recovery] Basic Manjaro Linux Rescue and Recovery

T600 is - according to Nvidia - supported by the open driver.

When you have opened your container and mounted the system - I suggest you install the package envycontrol and ensure your gpu is in Hybrid mode.

I will also suggest that you update the system when you are in the chroot as there was stable snap earlier today. Be sure to read the announcement BEFORE update.

Be sure to verify your GPU driver BEFORE restart. Use the Nvidia Driver Assistant to guide you

nvidia-driver-assistant

You may also edit your configuration to disable plymouth

  • /etc/mkinitcpio.conf (remove plymouth hook)
  • /etc/default/grub (remove splash from cmdline)

Then rebuild you init and update grub configuration

mkinitcpio -P
update-grub

The first thing will be to change the 580 nvidia driver. Either use older one or the free one.

There are several things that currently require a bit more maintenance and work with the terminal in manjaro (because there are no GUI tools for it):

  • encryption
  • btrfs
  • nvidia
  • plasma
  • wayland
  • plymouth (everybody should just disable it…the 3 moving dots)

All new and shiny technologies with a lot of benefits, but simplicity is not one of them. I am saying this since it is a new install and now is a good time to choose. You already spared yourself plasma and wayland, if you decide to reinstall think if you really need btrfs and encryption. As for nvidia, it is already there. So you will have to learn to deal with it, generally - the free or an old driver.
If you boot the live image in free driver mode it takes this on install. You probably booted the live usb in proprietary driver mode and thus got the 580 after install.
This will probably be changed in the next ISOs (Phil is working on it).

Thanks for the replies.

I had completely forgotten about Plymouth, but I now remember disabling it a couple of years ago after an update where more or less the exact thing happened… Strikes me as a useless piece of software…

I forgot to mention but I’m using ext4 on my root partition. I tried unlocking it with cryptsetup before chrooting but it would not budge and frankly I could not be arsed to look further into it on a saturday before asking here, as I would need guidance even if I managed to chroot into my installation anyways. This is a work laptop which will see a fair amount of travel with a considerable amount of intellectual property on it so disk encryption is a must.

I have had some bad experience in the past with nouveau albeit with a rather antique GPU, hence me defaulting to proprietary drivers.

I will look into your suggestions and get back to you in more detail tomorrow when I’m at work. Thanks again.

Well then, you need encryption and that is off the table. But Plymouth is on the table instead. Here is what the good ol arch wiki says for a temporary test

If you experience problems during boot, you can temporary disable Plymouth with the following kernel parameters:

plymouth.enable=0 disablehooks=plymouth

For the encryption, wait until someone more knowledgable on the topic chimes in, but looking at the arch wiki, it will basically be something like

cryptsetup open /dev/sda2 root
mount /dev/mapper/root /mnt

From the live usb.

I was trying to quote you Teo but ended up deleting my own reply instead with apparently no recourse. Sorry for that.

It turns out it was Plymouth all along. Passing those kernel parameters lets me boot with no problem at all. Now to nuke this useless piece of cruft from my install and make it homely… Thank you all for your help.

linux-aarhus: You brought up quite a few topics related to Nvidia which are new to me which will be very helpful, thank you.

Just wanted to chime in here with some additional info. I’ve been reinstalling quite a few times now due to some bizarre problems which are beginning to look more and more like hardware failure.

My initial installation was with the then “new” 25.0.10-251013 release. I’ve now done a fresh install from the 26.0-260104 release and the Plymouth problem still persists.

@tabxtra – Notice:

Despite it having being caught by the Discourse profanity filters, a reminder that language considered socially offensive – being vulgar, obscene, or irreverent – is unwelcome in the Manjaro forum.

The same applies to any partial obfuscation of offensive terms in an attempt to thwart the profanity filters.

Note that while many (myself included) may share your feelings with regard Plymouth, we do maintain/enforce use of language suitable for a work friendly environment.

Regards.

TL/DR: Don’t do it again.

Duly noted. While I have you here, could you undelete my previous post between Teos two replies? It has useful context and deleting it was an accident.
