so those freezes were happening also when running gnome? and before installing windows?
open this file:
kate /etc/environment
and add there this line:
QT_LOGGING_RULES='*=false'
save it
it will disable the kwin/qt logs, then reboot;
and reproduce the freeze and then provide logs:
sudo dmesg -l err,warn,emerg,alert
journalctl -b0 -p5 --no-pager
I am very sure, yes!
Alright, I will do my best to reproduce XD
(Un)Fortunately in the last few hours I had no problems, but I did not dare reinstall all my packages yet, either, so that’s what’s gonna happen now.
I hope I can say more tomorrow(Germany).
Thanks for the angle!!!
Hi again,
packages installed and freeze documented.
If it is better to include the logs in the opening message I can gladly edit it. For now here notes and data.
Freeze
Where and How
In Firefox. While using the forum. Less than a minute(possibly less than a half) after I started Firefox.
Detailed info will be supplied if helpful

Just a little side note:
Yes Windows and Linux handle power consumption differently. Instand crashing the whole OS, Linux tries always to crash only the correspondent application/library. Without going to into a lot of details: The assumption is right that if the nvidia card reach peak and the PSU cannot deliver the power, Linux will not crash, but rather discard it, what lead the application to crash.
Maybe you can set coolbits and set a strict limit to the card.
Here is a tool:
pamac build gwe
Or a flatpak install in your home folder:
flatpak --user remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
flatpak --user install flathub com.leinardi.gwe
flatpak run com.leinardi.gwe
Normally it should create a desktop icon automatically.
That could be a factor - a little swap is better than none at all - but since you are using btrfs - remember to take it into consideration when creating a swap file
the firefox crashing is a known bug:
removing the driver/s should help you with that
also you are running on the 5.19 kernel, switch to 5.15 and test with it
and in the logs/dmesg theres really nothing
Yeah, I thought so too. I wasn’t sure about the coredump, because I still do not fully understand what these are for, but I get the impression that they’re some kind of stacktrace like you get from Java for example.
That was a thought I had as well, but I reproduced the error with swap as well(not on this installation but on Monday). I will inevitably add swap, because I like hibernation.
That is a nice idea, I did not know there was a nice tool like that. I’ll read myself in in any case and probably do that, do you know if the tool defines those settings on the hardware itself, or if it’s on the driver level instead(i.e. will it effect Windows), because in that case I would be willing to possibly wait a few days for the new PSU, so that I don’t have to revert the settings then.
Interesting so hardware acceleration is already provided by nvidia-utils, which comes with the nvidia driver as well.
But libva is installed regardless of which driver is installed for the gpu.
Since libva is installed automatically even if nvidia drivers are used, do you think that would be worth mentioning somewhere and should be changed?
You have a lot of these lines. You should try to figure out if you have a USB device causing this (maybe a sound card?). You should also limit your systemd journal size so it doesn’t fill your hard drive.
Additionally I get the feeling that firefox is just kind of expanding its bug onto the responisveness of other programs in use at the same time. I will try and test that.
Oh yeah, sorry. I even know which one. It should be the soundbar from Teufel. It’s listed under device 3 in inxi. Apparently it only accepts samplerates of 48000Hz and there might be additional issues(i.e. the usb_set_interface failed one for example). I will probably open a new thread for that soon, but I wanted to focus on the freezes first. If you think they might be related, then by all means, please inform me so. Just for testing I will reboot with it plugged out to see if that changes anything.
Journal size
I did not know I could do that, probably a good idea, thx. I will see about doing that.
I was about to reply that the issue persists, but I noticed that I have many many libva packages installed. Will take care of them now, but will also put it in here:

Could remove only lib32-libva-mesa-driver libva-mesa-driver
without removing other packages.
It says libva depends on wayland, so should I only use it with Wayland possibly? Or is there perhaps another package that provides libva, that I should use instead. Alternatively I could try and switch to Wayland altogether. Just haven’t done it before, but I could try.
according to the link you should remove only these 2:
libva-vdpau-driver lib32-libva-vdpau-driver
dont know if removing the mesa drivers was a good idea…
also you are on kde + nvidia, so using wayland is a no no, you would be probably not even enter the desktop and if you would it would be really messy …
did you disconnected the usb and testet without it?
On Wayland: Yeah, I thought I had read something along those lines.
On mesa: I can reinstall them, no problem(and did so now). I thought I should because removing just
libva-vdpau-driver lib32-libva-vdpau-driver
did not solve the issue with firefox.
Whoops, did not do the usb thing yet. Be back in a moment!
I disconnected and rebooted. The lines in the journal are indeed gone, but that did not solve the firefox issue
Aside: I am responding from chromium as my fallback browser today.
so we know its not related to the usb errors …
does the freezes happens only in firefox?
Ah sorry.
It does not affect chromium at least. But mpc-qt is still very slow and takes forever to start.
I’ll try it without firefox running in a moment and then edit this post.
Edit
Had to reboot since I couldn’t even kill firefox with Ksysguard(may try htop next time).
MPC-QT did not manage to start playing video in over 3 minutes, so yes the problem persists in other applications. But it’s just the video. The interface itself responds and can close mpc.
so its only 2 apps that are causing you the issue so far?
post logs from the frozen boot:
journalctl -b-1 -p4 --no-pager
