Frequent Freezes after updating

Hello,
first bug report here, so please be nice^^

Since updating my system in the beginning of the year i’m getting frequent more or less random full freezes (not possible to get into tty2, or move the mouse), ocurring shortly after boot when i started working.
Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesnt.

When I had this problem the first time, i thought it would have been solved after switching to kernel 5.10 (update included kernel update), but now after updating yesterday the problem seems to be back.

Really clueless here, but i guess im a noob, kindof…
Help would be appreciated much!

@Keruskerfuerst, time of installation does not matter. After updating the system is as fresh as a new install unless you mess it up somehow.

@jochknoch, is the issue occurring in combination with blender or completely independent from the programs you are using?

What kind of recommendation is this? Are you kidding or what? I have my systems running for years and years! Please, if you don’t know what you’re talking about, don’t extrapolate your own “solutions” as de facto standards.

I don’t want to go off-topic, but since you insist, my desktop system went through two motherboards, three CPUs, three graphic cards and several disks. I’ve transferred the system to different disks at least 3 times. Currently, the same system which started running on an ext4 partition, in a spinning disk, runs in 3 lvm raid0 blocks, in two SSDs with f2fs. So don’t tell me I have to install the system every 1.5 years. That’s ridiculous and that’s precisely why I started using Arch in the first place, before Manjaro. Please open another thread if you want to keep this discussion, maybe you find out why you have the need to reinstall the system so often.

Back to topic: So after some days of working fine, it did it again.

@Wollie It defenitely happens independend of blender. Blender crashes sometimes, but that never freezes the whole system. Hasn’t been running always, too.
Not 100% sure, but Firefox might have been running every time.

Could it be something related to pulseaudio?

Rather late Update:

I “fixed” it by switching to another kernel (5.10).
The problem still occurs when using other ones.

I took a look at your hardware, and its getting older. Nothing wrong with that, especially if its doing everything you want to do. But sometimes older kernels work better with older hardware. My hardware is ancient and it runs best with 4.19. Newer kernels tend to try and make newer hardware work, sometimes the trade off is older hardware doesnt work as well as it used to.

I had the same problem recently with Firefox and audio system (both pulseaudio or pipeware). Something with rtkit-daemon and memory leak, i guess. didn’t get what exactly the problem is. System just hanged up. For the first 5-10 seconds mouse is working then system just deadly stops.

Try to not use Firefox for some time, to see if the problem is there. Also you may try nohang from aur. It’s easy to use and it won’t let you system to freeze (it just randomly kills processes when you’re in short of virtual memory :smiley: )
