Frequent desktop lock-ups when dragging smplayer window, since 2024-10-10

I wonder if anyone else has come across this and if so, if they’ve found a fix.
I hadn’t seen the problem before 2024-10-10, so it seems clear something in that update is triggering it.

When I drag an Smplayer window, the entire desktop freezes. Though the audio from Smplayer continues to play (so it’s very much screen-related). The whole thing seems un-recoverable; I’ve tried logging into a TTY and running plasmashell --replace, to no avail. Also tried sudo systemctl restart sddm, which does force another login (it’s configured to automatically log into my session) but that just brings up a broken desktop which is unresponsive, so the only way round it seems to be to reboot.

It only seems to be Smplayer, I haven’t seen the problem with any other software.
[Edit]: turns out it isn’t just Smplayer, as I’ve have the same problem when dragging a Thunderbird window. So evidentely that was just coincidence.

The journal doesn’t seem to give any useful clues; the only mention of Smplayer is multiple complaints from kmix - org.kde.kmix: No such icon "SMPlayer"

This is an AMD system running Plasma on Xorg, fully up-to-date with the latest upgrade.

Output of journal at the time of the problem:

Does Wayland work OK on your setup, and if so, does smplayer behave? x11 isn’t getting a lot of support these days and bugs are creeping in which probably won’t get fixed.

Unfortunately not. I’ve tried it a few times but never managed to get it working properly.

I was hoping this wouldn’t be the case.

Maybe the logs will reveal something e.g. journalctl -b -1 | tail -200 or some other log? (I’ll probably need to defer to others for which ones).

I do wonder (though unlikely) if having swap split over 2 disks, one GPT and the other MBR, might have some effect.

Im using Smplayer on my Full AMD Laptop (Wayland) and also my Intel/Nvidia PC (X11) and both system with KDE. Smplayer working flawless for my systems under KDE :man_shrugging:

Maybe it depends on the content? Did you play a mp4 file or Video file and which Video codec are in use?
Which Engine are you using on SMPlayer? Im using other… /usr/bin/mpv

Try to choose the other Multimedia engines under General.

It would also interesting to see if this freeze happen with VLC also.

Here’s a thought: any desktop effects which might influence this? Try turning them off temporarily.

… Although I have “Wobbly Windows” and can jiggle a video window round while it’s playing …

I am on Wayland, though; it did work when I was still using x11 but that was well over a year ago.

Sanity check: same in a Live session?

As I mentioned, the only reference to smplayer in the journal was kmix complaining about a missing icon. Nothing else I could find.

A bit of a red herring, that one. I’ve actually got swap disabled at the moment (doing a bit of experimentation since doubling my RAM to 32G). But thanks for the suggestion.

That’s a very useful thought. Funnily enough, I tried disabling wobbly windows, to no effect. But I didn’t think of trying to switch all effects off. Thanks.

I’m playing Matroska files (DVD/Blue Ray ripped with Makemkv). Using the MPV driver too. No freeze with VLC - I may end up going back to that, although I was really liking the Smplayer interface.

Maybe it is actually one of the smplayer configurations. It would be worth moving its config file(s) temporarily e.g. start with this:

mv ~/.config/smplayerrc ~/.config/smplayerrc.bak

…after closing smplayer, then it should re-create it on re-launch.

This process is easily reversible.

You may also try the same with the ~/.config/smplayer directory but without the trailing / (remove it if present, if you use autocomplete) when moving, so it’s the whole directory.

I would recommend to use Reisub magic syskeys or how they called:
alt+print+f to free your memory, to restore your system.

Matroska is just the container, i think the codec should be h264 or h265 then?

Here’s a link to the REISUB guide for reference:

Also, something I forgot to ask:
Any difference in behaviour whether something is playing or not, when you move the window?

From your description it does seem perhaps compositing related.

That said, smplayer is my default on Manjaro KDE, and I’ve seen so issues (AMD graphics).

Perhaps see how it performs under Wayland.

Likely unrelated:-

If there is a later BIOS available it might be worth updating it:

Thanks for the suggestion. In the end it turns out to be un-necessary as since posting I’ve had a lockup when Smplayer wasn’t running, so it was evidently just a coincidence that I’d only seen problems with it.

Thanks. I’m trying running with compositing completely disabled and I’ll see how things go with that. As it is, it turns out that Smplayer was a red-herring, as I’ve had another lockup dragging a Thunderbird window when Smplayer wasn’t even running. So evidently it’s more general.

I have to admit to wimping out of BIOS updates as I’m terrified of not being able to recover my computer if something goes wrong. Sad, isn’t it?

Many seem to feel that way about using terminal commands.

Fear of the (as yet) unknown, I guess. :man_shrugging:

Updating BIOS is usually a straight-forward process, though it can vary from one manufacturer to another. The main thing to keep in mind is not to do something stupid; like randomly banging on the keyboard or powering off before the new BIOS software has finished being written. :grimacing:

Have you considered switching to Wayland?

I see you’re using AMD graphics which typically play better with Wayland. Perhaps it’s worth trying to see if the issue goes away. In fact, you might even find Wayland generally more performant.

Something else you could try is switching to Testing branch for a while, and seeing if the new Kernel 6.12 (LTS) makes a difference. It’s expected to be in Stable sometime in November, so you could switch back when that happens.

Nothing else comes to mind.

Good luck.

I think it’s the fact that I’m confident I can recover from pretty much any mess-up on my OS itself, but would be stuck if I bricked my motherboard with a BIOS update that went wrong.

I’ve tried Wayland a few times without any success. Though the fact that there’s still no way to remap my mouse keys as I can with Xorg means I’ve probably given up more quickly than I would otherwise.

However, since I had a similar lock-up today without Smplayer running (dragging a Thunderbird window) I’m trying with compositing disabled; so far without lock-ups. If this stays stable I’ll try disabling all my desktop effects then just re-enabling them one by one.

Sounds like a decent plan.

Maybe you have an older (still) incompatible widget somewhere; or perhaps old/unused settings under ~/.config that might be causing issues. Emptying/deleting the ~/.cache directory could possibly help (do that from a TTY while you’re at the SDDM login screen).

Cheers.

Are you sure about that? I normally don’t consider release candidates to be “proper” releases:
