Freezing just after login, new installation

So it freezes just after you enter your password, you can still move mouse but other than that you can’t do anything except switch TTY.
Its highly intermittent, maybe 20% of the time it freezes.

This is a new installation (well yesterday) i have been working to get all the “appearance” stuff back how i like it, i suspect i must have done something wrong.

I have read the other threads but they don’t seem to offer anything.

Im just about to reinstall manjaro for the 4th time, on a 3rd partition (im getting into a mess here) but i thought id just ask first as im getting tired re-installing & then re-building everything. Each time a different problem.

Maybe, if im lucky some guru can save me yet another re-install.

I have been trying to look at logs like journalctl -S -3m -g ‘sddm’
but its all gibberish to me :frowning:

Where do i start?

Hi, that does not sound like fun. For others to help you with this more info about your hardware / setup specific errors would be essential. please see:

If you provide info about your hardware in the correct format (see link above) and the errors from the boot log others will be able to understand what went wrong and get you started fixing the issue.

inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width
journalctl --catalog --priority=3 --boot=-1

So i’v found that its not “frozen” permanently, if i wait for about 2 minutes (90seconds ish) it does load the desktop.

I see a lot of these blocks of info in the logs :-

I have seen this Could not load QT platform plugin xcb / Pacman & Package Upgrade Issues / Arch Linux Forums but i have no idea what its all about.

This is a new installation, how can there be QT dependencies missing anyhow.

Maybe its got something to do with the way i shrank my SSD, crated another partition, installed Manjaro on it, I think i just put the boot onto the SSD itself i.e. sda not sda1 or sda2.

Maybe its got nothing to do with any of this.

Thanks for the info and output,

The thread on the arch forum points to something that might be important for this issue, the connection to the x-server. I’m not sure I am the one to help you with this since I’m hardly a expert, but lets start collecting data and do some basic checks. The output of your error boot log and the arch forum post suggests some display issue. The laptop hardware support might not be a full 100%, if this is the first linux installation on it (I can’t find the specific model on the arch wiki) you might be the first with this problem. (Being the first does have it’s drawbacks) Browsing the dell site for info the laptops seems supported with ubuntu and there is a 7 April urgent bios update available. Does Ubuntu install on the laptop?

When you install, do you use the the open source or propriety drivers when booting up and what kind if afterinstall updates and tweaks do you do?

The full output of inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width might shed some light on the hardware support, especially the Graphics part will show you the driver used and what parts there are found.

sudo dmesg --level emerg, alert, crit, err, warn will show you the important hardware errors

and cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log will show the x server log and that will probably have some a error

I had linux on this lappy for many years. It was all working up until 8 months ago when after an update it developed a intermittent fault of not going to sleep properly. After 8 months of trying to figure out why i decided to just try a new installation, and here we are with multipule instalations and more problems than i started with  .

I was unaware.

Not tried ubuntu for a long time, however i did switch back to my sda1 installation of Manjaro just to check and my suspicions were right, it seems that all 3 of my profiles of Manjaro are doing the same thing during login. Now it may just be that i never noticed before because i usually only have one user account and that auto login so i wouldn’t notice. Not sure on that one.

I installed with open drivers.

Not sure what this means, on this installation all iv done is tweak the appearance and installed a couple of minor things & fully update,
