FPS Overlay showed up after updating, can't get rid of it

Hello. After the update today I have an fps meter on the top right of all of my displays. Please help me get rid of it. I looked in desktop settings and there’s nothing related to it. I currently can’t do my job because of this. Extremely distressing.

I apparently can’t upload a screenshot in this post? I just tried and got an error saying I couldn’t.

Maybe share a screenshot snippet of the counter …

I tried to post a screenshot but a window popped up saying I can’t put screenshots in a post. So how? It said I can’t embed media in a post. So how am I supposed to post a screenshot?

Welcome to the forum! :waving_hand:

A screenshot is not necessary, we know what an FPS overlay looks like.

I suggest checking your MangoHud config file. Sound like it’s globally enabled.

I never had it on before. I’ve never used mango hud, The fps meter stuck to my screen doesn’t look like that at all. It has “Paint Duration” and “Paint Amount” on the top and “Current FPS” and “Maximum FPS” below both of those respectively. Underneath that there’s “This effect is not a benchmark”

edit: I found a post with the overlay but I can’t even post links? How am I supposed to get any help if no one can see what I’m talking about? My nvidia settings also no longer allow me to rearrange my displays or change my power settings.

You can paste a link in between backticks like so:

`https:// this is not a link dot com`

As for the nvidia settings I assume it all stems from the same update issue. So I thought I would mention it.

… and the provided solution

Search for Desktop Effects go down to Show FPS and uncheck the box. Then hit apply. I’m wondering how you turned it on considering it is off by default. You’re the first person I have seen with this issue.

did not work for you?

There is no “Show FPS” setting listed. No it did not. I wouldn’t be here if it did.

I just checked in a KDE Plasma VM and I didn’t see that setting, either.

Is there a console command to force it to go away?

I would hope so… I haven’t found anything yet, however.

As of right now because of this issue I currently can’t use my pc for work. I need the full display unobstructed. I’m incredibly distressed. Please update me if you find anything.

Check your ~/.config/kwinrc file and see if there’s something related.

I found showfpsEnabled=True. Im gonna change it to false and reboot and see if that helps.

Aha!
:detective: :magnifying_glass_tilted_right:

That fixed it! Thanks Yochanan. Not sure if its related to the update but when I rebooted, chromium stopped launching (when I launched the program a window popped up asking me to map global shortcuts? and then it closed, chromium just wouldn’t launch after that) and I had to install the snap version to get back here to post lol.

You saved me. Seriously thank you.

You’re welcome.
