[Forum Usage] Discourse Tips and Tricks

Did you take that photo, or is it a Shellfie?

Wasn’t me, and their legs are to short for it to be a selfie, so probably.

Edit:

Obviously I’m going blind, as I just saw this:

And to that I say: luckily not Command Prompts.

It certainly would be entertaining … for us, if we could observe the results!

I wonder if it’s worth mentioning use of modifier keys for special characters like ↑↓←→ (can’t find a combo for the double arrow though?) and also stuff like æ, ö, é, °, ¼, ™ etc… These are pretty universal, not exclusive to Discourse though?

e.g. METAe= for € (which isn’t on any of my keyboards). I have set right super & right ALT depending on which KB.

I did put a thread up somewhere showing all the ones I knew of then; not sure if it’s here, on the old Forum or on the Mint Forums. I’ll look for it if it’s of interest.

I think this could too easily lead us down the proverbial rabbit hole. We already have ← (<--), → (-->) and ↔ (<-->), although the vertical arrows seem appealing; I don’t know if there’s a straight text substitution alternative for those. There might be.

With regard the other characters, I think the ASCII Extended Table probably covers those, don’t you think?; … or a deep-dive into Unicode.

The availability of modifier keys is another issue; in Windows there is the long standing Alt+Keypad # combo; but in Linux, modifier keys and methods to insert special characters seem to vary according to the whim-of-the-day.

If you find the old post you mentioned, it might be worth updating as a new tutorial, but I think it’s too much for this one.

Here’s the ASCII Extended Table prepared as markdown (ready to copy/paste) if you’d like to use it.

Incidentally, I don’t have a META key on my keyboard. However, I’m sure I have an ANY key… somewhere… It’s here, I know it’s just being elusive, but I haven’t quite found it (yet).

Those are my thoughts too, just thought I’d offer it. I probably will make a tutorial.

As for the ANY key, I believe that was Homer in one of the Simpsons episodes :wink: might have been a parody though.

which was also the same episode that showcased this early alpha version of yes

IIRC it’s global, set in your X/DE configuration and called the Compose key. I have set mine to Right Alt. So:

  • RAlt+ Shift + " + e → ë;
  • RAlt+ Shift + " + Shift + E → Ë;
  • RAlt+ Shift + ^ + e → ê;
  • RAlt+ ' + e → é;

etc, etc…

I’ll do you one better:

You think? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
Now look at what you started… the 90’s kiddies have come out to play.

…seem young…

Bart should be 44 now…

Well, he has kept a job, he has raised children, he had a family, and he’s only 44?! I’d say that’s a good run!

@BG405

I look forward to linking to it from here when it’s completed.

@Mirdarthos posted a link to the most commonly found information on the topic. Some people have luck with that; some don’t. Most likely Gnome users will have the best luck.

No information I’ve found in recent years seems to have helped with KDE. Of course, just like Linux, KDE is a moving target.

I used to enjoy adding a trademark symbol to my signature for no apparent reason.

Image Grids

I recently found Introducing image grids in posts which looks to have some potential. Scanning through the Discourse comments suggests the feature isn’t quite as mature as might be expected.

Links are not directly clickable at this time, however, the original image can be opened in a new tab using right-click.
