Formatting old hard-drives

As the title says, how do i format and use my old harddrives? Im on a desktop pc and just installed Manjaro on top of win10. I have 2 harddrives connected i want to use and they have a mounting error. How do i format and use them?
Very new to this by the way.

Hi @marus, and welcome!

It can be easy or hard. It depends on what you want to do with the hard drives. Also, it highly depends on what the errors are when trying to do anything with them. That’ll tell you, or someone if it’s recommended or not. Because, if they are too old, it can lead to data loss.

  • which tools have you used for formatting disks ?
  • what errors did you get ?

Maybe you can look at the disks with GParted. You can do this without mounting them
image

The discs don’t seem too old. 1TB, 250GB haven’t been around for too long. But it might be useful to read the smart values, how long the disks have been in use, how many starts … And then there’s an SSD. Which of these 3 are the drives you are talking about?

If you do inxi as root, you will get more information about your system, which is now missing.
