I bought a new focusrite scalett 18i8 3 gen a few days ago. I get 19 channels in the sound configuration in the kde control center and have selected multichannel input for focusrite there.
I use Vokoscreen to record my Linux movies. Basically, I use focusrite for music production. But in the previous focusrite 6i6 2nd gen I had, I also used it for my video recordings in linux.
But with the new 18i8 I have one panning problem! Regardless of the settings, I only get output sound on the left when I play the movie! Note; I don’t have this problem if I use my 4K logotech web camera’s microphone in Vokoscreen or the microphone on my headphones.
Is the focusrite scalett 18i8 3 gen not fully supported in Manjaro? Or is there something I don’t see or understand here?
Yes I installed this software in Manjaro linux and everything seems to work, see my pictures below here.
But then there was this with routing. This is what my standard looks like after I switch on focusrite. I don’t understand much of this, maybe someone can explain to me what things should be set! How do I pan the channel where the microphone is connected on the focusrite, it is connected to the first input on the forcusrite. Incidentally, I have two keyboards connected to four inputs on the back, to get stereo.
For those of you wondering how I installed alsa scarlett in Manjaro. see the instructions below here.
On Arch:
sudo pacman -S gtk4
To download from github:
git clone https://github.com/geoffreybennett/alsa-scarlett-gui
cd alsa-scarlett-gui
To build:
cd src
make -j4
To run:
./alsa-scarlett-gui
I tested OBS. And it went well there, because I can set the mic to mono in the advanced settings in OBS. When it comes to Mixcraft studio in Win10, I have tested it via Wine in Linux with success before. Also my Thontrack music programs. But it is quite clear that it would have been an advantage if I understood something more about Routing in Alsa-Scarlett. Too bad about Vokoscreen, which I like so much.
In Reaper studio on Manjaro i get this right, i have licens on Reaper.
The mic its mono there. And i hopes there are stereo also for there other channels!
Wine was not a god option in Manjaro, because i don`t get Focusrite channels into Mixcraft studio there. I try to install Focusrite driver into wine, Focusrite control-program start but only black window! Maybe there its some configuration possibility in wine for this problem, but i can so little about wine so that will not help me here. Then after install Wine the take so long time every time before the computer restart! After a uninstall wine and clean computer, all was back to normal again. I think all wine-service slow down the restart!
Vokoscreen dont have possibility to sett audio on mono specific and don`t have a audio pan button, so i will begin to learn little more about OBS. Because the audio config in OBS i can sett mic from Focusrite on mono, so all get right in OBS.
But i haven`t givit up win software in Manjaro. So now i will try install win10 on virtualbox.
But no, the virtual box on Manjaro wont working vid usb and Focusrite! so the focusrite control app have a black screen there to. So that`s it. For Music production i most continue use win10 on the physical computer, like i have did all time.
I have paid way too much money for windows 10 music programs to only use free music programs in Linux, which I have to learn all over again. Also, Linux doesn’t have as many equal-sided music production programs as the ones I’ve bought for windows. But I use Manjaro for most computer work and windows for music production.
I am getting a new USB sound card for the computer this week. "Asus Xonar U5 " 5.1 so that I can get this to work better with Manjaro, instead of the sound card that I have used for a number of years “soundblaster z” which has also started to have problems in windows10. I’m not too keen on Dolby on the computer, as I never watch movies on the computer. As I understand it, this sound card “Asus Xonar U5” should be fully compatible with Linux.
But to end this thread.
For those of you who experience the same sound problem as me with vokoscreen! install OBS and set audio to mono in the audio configuration.
Download Reaper, it is the best music studio for Linux today. And it is very cheap to buy, and there are almost endless free plugins to download. On the Reaper website you also have free access to many howto films.
To sum up all the information, it still appears quite clear to me;
I solved the sound problem with the Focusrite 18i8 3 gen sound card and the condenser microphone, which only delivered sound to the left when playing the video I had recorded in Vokoscreen in Manjaro.
Vokoscreen video recorder does not have any option to set the sound in mono or pan the sound in the configuration.
But then I installed OBS. In OBS, I could set the sound to mono in the sound configuration in OBS. The problem was solved.
And Reaper music studio works brilliantly in Manjaro with the new Focusrite sound card. But I will probably have to continue editing the music in Windows, as I have the best music production programs I depend on there.
Below you see a picture of the Reaper studio and the Alsa-Scarlett control center in Manjaro.
There are many good free music production programs for Linux and Manjaro. So for those of you who can’t afford or don’t want to buy expensive equivalent programs that exist for Windows or Mac, then Linux is without a doubt an equal alternative.
You just have to understand that things are done a little differently in the setup and configuration in Linux than in other operating systems. But aren’t you afraid to learn something new within the subject! then it costs nothing to set up and use Linux to record and edit music.
You get the same excellent results in Linux as you do with other operating systems, but you have to learn something new. but in return it doesn’t cost you a penny. Well, if you’re going to buy a Reaper, it costs. but this is not necessary, as there is equivalent software for Linux that is completely free.

But personally I say like most Linux users who work with music; Ardour music studio is probably the best in Linux today https://ardour.org/
