First character appears twice in Activities Overview

Hi there! I reported the bug to the corresponding thread. In the meantime I find the bug is making my life harder and I don’t want to go over a downgrade, so I thought I could try and dig into what’s behind the bug and even find a fix. I am writing to this category in hope of finding ideas for doing that kind of research. Apologies in advance if this kind of cross-posting is not desirable.
After a major update (I believe it was the one referred to in the linked thread) I started to experience an unpleasant bug in Activities Overview. The first character I write appears twice. I can only use the command after I delete the extra character. For example, if I want to write “firefox” I have to press “f”, “ff” shows in the text box, I then press BACKSPACE, and then I can write “irefox”
You can see the bug in the following video. Thanks for your help!!

It seems to be related with an extension, if you disabled the extensions and restart the session, its solved, the extension with the issue is dash to dock. This extension had a similar issue before (issue 4651 in gnome-shell) if you use the “Gnome” layout in “Layouts” application the problem is solved and you dont need to disabled all extensions.

Solved!!! Thanks a lot!!!

This works for me as well. I got this behavior after regalar update of the rolling release.
After switching of “dash to dock” and logoff the session, I can reactivate the “dash to dock” again and the issue is still gone.
One observations I did, before I fix this issue: When you focus by a click in the search bar, then the first letter just appears once.
Thank you for the help.

Found help here: Duplicate first key stroke on activities overview · Issue #1855 · micheleg/dash-to-dock · GitHub

Me again, sorry to say, but after an reboot the issue is back there. Todays update, didn’t fix the problem.
Are there some other help to fix it, without switching off the “dash to dock” “forever”?

regards

Hi,
I’ve having an error that consist on the first character that I type when searching being put twice. It started happening a few weeks ago, and since that, I got the gnome 43.1 update, I was on 42.5, if I remember correctly.
I don’t know what other information I can provide appart from that I’m using the spanish keyboard layout, and that I don’t know if this is an error particular to manjaro or if its general to gnome, I didn’t find anything by searching online.

Thanks

@skay: Your post has been restored.

@delthia I’ve merged your topic here for better visibility since folks are still having issues (that I can’t reproduce, by the way).

Is the marked solution still valid?

Sorry about the confusion, I’m in a lot of pain right now and it’s affecting my mental functions

Yes, disabling the extension does stop the problem from happening, but changing the layout to ‘gnome’ has the same effect of disabling the extension, but it just does it automatically and also changes other settings.

As mentioned on a previous post, there is an issue on their github page, but I didn’t think of looking there before

Hi,

the solution of [dgmvecuador] didn’t work for me proper, as I wrote, because I want to keep using the dash-to-dock option and after re-login first the issue was gone (even after re-activating it), but after reboot my system the issue comes up again.

So the solution to switch off the “Overview on startup” (see Thread at dash-to-dock git:

Is a better workaround for me, because for me, I can do without the “Overview on startup”. On that way, the issue does not appear anymore and I can still use the dash-to-dock, then.

I have this double character problem , dash to dock is installed but disabled, problem still happens.

I had thought it corresponded with my switching from Wayland to Xorg, so that I could use ‘Barrier’, but looks instead like my switch to Xorg corresponded with an upgrade which brought in this issue perhaps.

But after disabling all extensions, I still get the double character.

Can confirm clicking in the search box does NOT double the character.
