Firefox crashing from OOM due to the Lightbeam extension

hello!

I’ve had Firefox crashing repeatedly on my manjaro stable install. I launch it, it opens up, then proceeds to fill the ram to the maximum, then is closed automatically.

With some difficulty, because of my vast ignorance, I ran it with GDB, to be able to provide more info. I created the following script, marked it as executable with and ran it.

run_firefox.sh

#!/bin/bash

Set a file to store the backtrace

BACKTRACE_FILE=“firefox_backtrace.txt”

Start gdb and run Firefox

gdb -ex “set pagination off” -ex “run” -ex “backtrace” -ex “quit” --args /usr/lib/firefox/firefox “$@” 2> “$BACKTRACE_FILE”

cat gdb.txt

I did what I could to share the info. I’ll now try getting around this issue.

EDIT. I ran it in safemode :

firefox --safe-mode                                                                                                                                                                                ✔
[GFX1-]: RenderCompositorSWGL failed mapping default framebuffer, no dt

It does not crash nor fills the ram.

If it works in safemode, I guess that an addon is running wild.

I disabled the Lightbeam extension, and it stopped.

I ran out of energy at this point, I don’t want to create a new account to open a ticket. I’ll just wait it out…

Just imagine if everybody opted to do that;
the wait could be awfully long…

I understand where you come from, and I sympathize with what you say. I’ll create the damn new account then, and pass on my outputs.

It’s just that I already went beyond what could reasonably be expected of the lambda, non-tech savy user that I am.

I had to find out about GBD, figure out how to launch Firefox with it, because in the /bin folder there isn’t actually any executable, it’s a script that points to the actual executable in another directory.

Then I found out that the terminal window where I launch GBD closes when Firefox crashes. I had to find out about how to get the GBD log and where the log file is stored.

I then wanted to run a backtrace to collect more information, and for that I had to create a script when I do not know anything about creating such tool, to store the output in a file to get around this issue. So, a lot of back and forth with Chatgpt, not being sure of anything.

After that, I had to spend a good part of an hour creating the post, partly because I did not remember how to hide the very lengthy outputs and had to recheck the good practices when reporting something.

It all adds up, time wise, and it was quite a bit of struggle for me just to do these relatively simple steps.

I then figured out what extension was causing that, and the extension website does not inform on how to report a bug. I found out where the source code is stored, and thus where to open a ticket and ok, there it was, a website where I do not have an account.

I felt I had to fight every single step, and I gave up on that one. I had spent something like two hours and a half on the endeavor.

I do not really use the extension, on top of that. But since I have a lot of respect for the open-source projects and contributors, I’ll finish the job.

I’m done complaining :smiley:
Have a great day!

I’m surprised it didn’t give you instructions to make a cup of expresso using only the latest kernel.

Don’t let anyone tell you Linux isn’t a learning experience! :wink:

Cheers.

I’m just wondering if it might have been a lot easier and quicker to open Firefox’s about:memory page to find out which add-on was chewing up all the memory.

Also, the Lightbeam for Firefox add-on was updated on the 29th of September. If the issue was occurring before that date, then the update may fix it; otherwise, if the issue occurred only from that date, then the update may have caused it. Here’s the changelog:

Latest version

Version 3.0.8

Released Sep 29, 2024 - 903.72 KB

Works with firefox 120.0 and later, android 120.0 and later

  • Fix: In dialogs white text was displayed on a white background in the
    light theme.
  • New: Zoom controls
  • New: Buttons to reset settings
  • Improvement: Remember the selected mode e.g. fuse mode
  • Improvement: Use different icons for visited websites and 3rd parties so
    they fit the symbols used in the graph

Since Firefox crashed shortly after starting up, It would have been a bit impractical to open about:memory.

I’m quite aware that the add-on updated, and it’s precisely when it began occurring. Before that, I had no problems. Thank you for looking into it and sharing anyway!

EDIT : I solved it by removing the add-on, restarting Firefox, and reinstalling it. Everything works again.
The complete steps were :

  1. starting Firefox in the terminal with
    firefox --safe-mode
  2. removing the add–on,
  3. closing Firefox,
  4. restarting Firefox normally,
  5. installing the add-on again.
