Firefox 140.0 (64-bit), no sound?

System has sound, but videoes online, no sound Firefox is at 100% for app. volume in the KDE Volume widget. It was fine yesterday.

Is the volume slider in the videos that you’re watching up too?

I’m asking because I once had a similar problem, and it turned out that the volume on the YouTube videos themselves was set to “muted”, probably due to a mouse pointer slip.

Sorry about that, I got it, the volume was up before, not sure what it was. Computer, gotta lovem.

So it was indeed the volume on the videos themselves?

If so, don’t fret about it. Like I said, it happened to myself as well once.

Another possibility.

If you use KDE, then there’s a little mute button on the window icon, in the top right corner. Very easy to catch it by accident.

Ah yes, and more precisely, you are referring to the task manager entry. I’ve had that happening to me a few times as well.

Nope, no idea what it was.

But you do have sound again now? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Tes, no idea how it even happened. Makes no sense.

My educated guess, given your visual problems, is that it would have happened as described by @dmt in post #5, so I’ll mark his post as the solution.

Could’ve been either, and at least in firefox there’s a another mute on the tab too.

I’m starting to think there are too many ways to mute audio.

User can check level indicators in audio GUI controls to determine where audio is muted

  1. If no audio appears to be playing, audio is muted before audio server (PulseAudio or PipeWire)
( Firefox has Ctrl+M to toggle audio mute on and off )

  2. If audio appears to be playing but level indicator is greyed out, audio is muted in audio server and can be un-muted in GUI controls

  3. If audio appears to be playing normally, audio might be muted in ALSA mixer
or audio server might have lost connection to ALSA playback device
or audio server is using another device for playback
