Feelling a bit adventurous I decided to take a walk on the wild side

No issues. Feelling a bit adventurous I decided to take a walk on the wild side. Launched Pamac, refreshed databases and performed the update with Pamac.

Not that adventurous for me. I’ve been doing it almost exclusively (like 99.9%) in GUI in Pamac on KDE Plasma and Cinnamon and it hasn’t been the cause of a problem for years now.

As far as I know, it very often is not a problem to update via GUI. But sometimes it can bite you.

I’ve been bitten once and ever since, whenever I see anything less than a minimal update, before switching off the PC, instead of actually switching it off:

  • I log out
  • press Ctrl-Alt-F3 (to enter a tty)
  • login as root
  • systemctl stop sddm (I am using KDE)
  • pacman -Syyu
  • shutdown -h now
The updates usually have already been downloaded (I think there is a relevant option in pamac GUI, which is by default selected, if my memory serves me right), so it’s just the installation.

It has saved me a couple of times from fuss, so I have integrated it to my routine. Especially helpful for laptops or PCs that I seldomly use…

Anyway, my 2 cents.
