Failed to start Light Display Manager, exhausted my options

I installed a new gpu: 6750xt from a GTX1660Ti and found that the grub boot was not working. I messed around with a few things and thought it would be a good idea to delete and reinstall the grub EFI partition. I set a 300Mb fat32 partition for grub and set the mount point to /mnt/boot/efi and flags to boot and grub. For the home partition, I just reset the mount point to / and ran the installation.

Grub is on /dev/nvme1n1p1 and home is /dev/nvme1n1p2. Windows is on /dev/nvme0n1p1. Before this, grub let me boot into either manjaro or windows.

Trying to boot into manjaro now, I get the error message on grub: light display manager is not starting.

I can get to TTY, and also chroot into a live usb.

*Edit: Solution

  1. Remove video-vesa and video-modesetting
  2. Reinstall video drivers
  3. Remove xauthority
  4. Reboot
  5. startxfce4

I have tried:

  • removing the nvidia driver and adding in video-linux
  • adding amdgpu.dc=0 in /etc/default/grub and then running update-grub
  • enabling os-prober as well
  • Changing the kernel version: linux61, linux515
  • adding modules=(amdgpu) to /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and then running mkinitcpio -P
  • /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf uncommented logind-check-graphical=true

Scenarios

  1. Linux515, modules=(amdgpu), logind-check-graphical=true
  • “failure to start light display manager”, I can access TTY from here
  1. Linux 515, modules=(amdgpu), logind-check-graphical=true, amdgpu.dc=0
  • black display with purple and yellow lights at the top which then freezes no access TTY
  1. Linux61, modules=(amdgpu), logind-check-graphical=true, amdgpu.dc=0
  • black screen, no access to TTY

# MODULES
# The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
# run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
# in this array. For instance:
# MODULES=(usbhid xhci_hcd)
MODULES=(amdgpu)

# BINARIES
# This setting includes any additional binaries a given user may
# wish into the CPIO image. This is run last, so it may be used to
# override the actual binaries included by a given hook
# BINARIES are dependency parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
BINARIES=()

# FILES
# This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
# as-is and are not parsed in any way. This is useful for config files.
FILES=""

# HOOKS
# This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
# modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
# Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the
# order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook name>' for
# help on a given hook.
# 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
# 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
# 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
# Examples:
## This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
## No RAID, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.
# HOOKS=(base)
#
## This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should
## work as a sane default
# HOOKS=(base udev autodetect modconf block filesystems fsck)
#
## This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
## No autodetection is done.
# HOOKS=(base udev modconf block filesystems fsck)
#
## This setup assembles a mdadm array with an encrypted root file system.
## Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H mdadm_udev' for more information on RAID devices.
# HOOKS=(base udev modconf keyboard keymap consolefont block mdadm_udev encrypt filesys>
#
## This setup loads an lvm2 volume group.
# HOOKS=(base udev modconf block lvm2 filesystems fsck)

## NOTE: If you have /usr on a separate partition, you MUST include the
# usr and fsck hooks.

what does

sudo systemctl status lightdm

return ?

sudo systemctl status lightdm
*Took a photo from TTY

lightdm --test-mode --debug in TTY

Maybe it’s something to do with "error reading existing Xauthority: failed to open file ?/run/lightdm/root/:0?: Perrmission denied
So possible read/write permission issues?

Also tried to no avail
sudo systemctl enable lightdm --force

…and does

sudo systemctl start lightdm

give any effect or response?

No, just sends me back to the same message with no change:
[FAILED] Failed to start Light Display Manager.

try:

sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300

pacman -S xorg-server xorg-xinit xorg-xrandr xorg-xsetroot

sudo pacman -S lightdm

sudo pacman -S lightdm-gtk-greeter

sudo pacman -S lightdm-gtk-greeter-settings

sudo systemctl enable lightdm

Ran all of the pacman commands and didn’t run into any errors. Unfortunately, no change to the error message. Still Failed to start Light Display Manager.

did you uninstalled the nvidia drivers and removed the configs?

find $HOME/ -name ".Xauthority"
find /etc/X11/ -name "*.conf"
ls /etc/modprobe.d

I believe I did uninstall the nvidia drivers as I only see video-modesetting, video-vesa and video-linux in mhwd-li

find $HOME/ -name “.Xauthority”

/home/abraham/.Xauthority
find: /home/abraham/.cache/yay/ceph/pkg: Permission denied
find: /home/abraham/.cache/yay/anki/pkg: Permission denied

find /etc/X11/ -name “*.conf”

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-mhwd.conf
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/00-keyboard.conf
/etc/X11/mhwd.d/vesa.conf

ls /etc/modprobe.d

alsa-base.conf mhwd-gup.conf sound.conf

Do I need to remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-mhwd.conf?

and here we got the possible problem…
post also output from:

Got a black screen with a blinking cursor but can still enter TTY.
Tried adding amdgpu.dc=0 to /etc/default/grub but then I got a black screen with no blinking cursor and no ability to enter TTY

so reinstall your video drivers:
sudo mhwd -r pci video-linux
install them:
sudo mhwd -a pci free 0300
remove the xauthority:
rm /home/abraham/.Xauthority
reboot

if you end up again with a black screen, type this from tty:
startxfce4

Removed and reinstalled the video-linux driver and also removed xuauthority.
Got to a black blank screen, entered TTY and ran startxfce4. Rebooted and ran into the same issue. (Thank you)
Does that mean there’s still an issue with lightdm?

and the startxfce4 didnt show any output?
maybe disabling lightdm and installing a different DM could help?

I meant to say startxfce4 gets me into Manjaro, and see my desktop.

i see…
did you remove also the vesa.conf?
still would try a different dm:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Display_manager

Yes, removed vesa.conf

I’ll try a different display manager. Thank you for your help!

so did it work with a different dm?
