I had to do something similar to your situation with some old internal drives I kept for sentimental purposes. I was copying files over to a new drive, but then it stopped and started acting funky whenever I kept trying to resume or retry. The difference is I realized I already had these files backed up elsewhere, so the remainder of this “recovering project” was just for the sake of playing around and expirementing.
