Evolution mail client > No vertical scrollbar in mail preview

Hello,

In my Evolution mail client I cannot see a vertical scroll bar in the message preview window. I also cannot see a vertical scrollbar when I open the message in to a separate window.

In each case I can click on the message body and then use the arrow down key to move down the message but I am unable to see a vertical scrollbar.

Can I change a setting somewhere to add the vertical scrollbar back in or is it very small in which case how would I make it bigger?

Cheers,

Flex

not specifically towards Evolution -
and I wouldn’t know how it looks or how it used to look, but
sometimes the scroll bars are very thin and only expand to be a bit wider when you hover the mouse over them

It might simply be your choice of theme - compatibility might get lost with changing versions of the underlying desktop environment.

Where to change the setting depends on your Desktop - did you tell us which one you use? :upside_down_face:

Thanks Nachlese,

I don’t see any scrollbars when I hover around the edges of the email.

As for my current theme, I went in to system settings and:
Global Theme = Breath
Colors = Breath Light
Application Style = Breeze
Plasma Style = Breath Dark
Window Decorations = Breeze
Icons = Breeze
Cursors = Breeze

My desktop is KDE.

This thread on askubuntu talks about changing the size of scrollbars but not sure if it would apply in my case?

Cheers,

Flex

So your DE is KDE

As far as I know, Evolution is a GTK based app
more geared towards Gnome and perhaps Xfce4 …

There are ways to make them look similar.
qt5ct or qt6ct I believe

Perhaps it’s only a matter of configuring these - to better integrate gtk based apps into QT based environments like Plasma/KDE.

I don’t know either.
Why don’t you try?

but:
that whole thing you linked to is from 8 years ago … I would not take it as important/valid current info

ps:

I just installed it in my Plasma VM.

obviously I do not have any mail account set up there
(and I will not do that just to try)
but the scroll bars look just fine and wide enough …

I run a dark theme.
my settings according to screenfetch:

GTK Theme: Breeze-Dark [GTK2], Breeze [GTK3]
Icon Theme: breeze

It most definitely sounds like a theme issue because of Evolution being a GTK app. I live in Evolution, but I use Cinnamon.

First, make sure you have adwaita-icon-theme, and adwaita-icon-theme-legacy installed.

Second, go into evolution and change the settings > Appearance from GNOME to Standard

If the above does not work, read this from Arch, it’s a mess! Uniform look for Qt and GTK applications - ArchWiki

Then report back

Thank you both for your help.

I had these things already set up in my Manjaro KDE desktop environment but still no vertical scrollbars in Evolution.

I took a look at that Wiki you linked and followed the instruction to go to:

System Settings > Appearance > Application Style > Configure GNOME/GTK Application Style

In here my GTK Theme was set to Breeze, changing to any other theme restored the vertical scrollbars in Evolution.

I ended up choosing Adwaita although the blue contrasts with the green in all my other applications which is a small bit annoying. Choosing “Breath” is another option. That retains the green and gives vertical scrollbars but they look a bit funny with that theme.

So Adwaita it is.

Thank you!
