Ethernet cap at 100 mbit/s

Hey,

3 months ago my isp upgraded my internet from 100 mbit to 300 mbit.
Everything was working fine until it got capped out of nowhere to 100 mbit since 2 months. My Router says 337 mbit are available from my isp and also my WLAN connected smartphone has über 170 mbit/s.

Linux says it’s max. 100 mbit?
Can someone help me with this out?

What does it say - and where does it say it?
How did you acquire that information?

All of my download rate and speed tests are limited to 100 mbit/s
Also this screenshot:

“Network”

“Wired connection”

You are using a wired connection.
It appears that either your routers network adapter or the one in your machine (or both) are only rated at 100 mbit//s

It may also be a bad quality cable, preventing the two partners to negotiate a higher speed.

It is very likely simply a hardware limitation on one of the devices.

For instance:
I know that my Laptop’s ethernet adapter can only do 100 Mbit/s max. (it’s not the newest with being more than 10 years old …)

My router can do much more (1 Gbit/s I think) - but I simply can’t make use of that with this laptop’s built in ethernet adapter.

What happens when you click on the “Configure” icon (highlighted in red below)?

Screenshot_20241014_204948

But the weird thing is, it was working 2 months before :open_mouth:

Here is my terminal output:

Network:

Device-1: Realtek RTL8111/8168/8211/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet

IF-ID-1: nm-bridge state: up speed: 100 Mbps duplex: unknown mac:
IF-ID-2: virbr0 state: down mac:

Only details but nothing to configure accroding to network speed.

Please provide the full output of:

inxi --admin --verbosity=8 --filter --no-host --width

This will help to understand your hardware capabilities.

It may be that updating you BIOS may improve things; see the hardware manufacturer website for details.

Updating your kernel can potentially help; or, in this case, reverting to kernel 6.6 (LTS), 6.1 (LTS) or possibly even older, depending on the age of your machine.

We can only guess until you provide more information.

Cheers.

The only thing I can say is:
my router has got 4 ports (I believe) (Fritz!Box 6660)
only one of them is capable of delivering gigabit speeds - and/or it can be set via the configuration interface of the box which port is which …)
if it is the same for you - perhaps you used the wrong port?
… it’s all speculation

@soundofthunder asked for hardware info …

here is the full output

This can be the reason maybe, yes

Please use the </> button when pasting command output to avoid great walls of text like the one you just posted. Thanks.

To fix that post, please edit it and place three (3) backtick characters both before and after the text:

```
[Assume this is your great wall of text]
```

This will achieve the same result; and those trying to help won’t have to scroll to Antarctica and back to find anything useful.

Cheers.

I assume you are running Gnome, as I had a look at one of your previous topics. This means you should have nm-connection-editor installed.

Open nm-connection-editor from a terminal. You should then see a GUI listing your network connections. Double-click on the connection in the “Ethernet” section. The default name will be something like enp1s0 (edit: enp4s0 according to your inxi output) - something that starts with an “e” (for ethernet). You should then see the settings for that connection - this is what mine looks like (I am running nm-connection-editor in Plasma):

You probably have the link negotiation set to “Ignore”, which is the default setting.

Ignoring link negotiation

In this case, NetworkManager ignores link configuration for an ethernet connection, keeping the already configuration on the device.

Try changing that to “Automatic”. If those options are not available to you as a normal user, then you may have to open nm-connection-editor using sudo to access the settings. Automatic negotiation should (hopefully) pick up the higher speed you now have. You might need to reboot, or at least disconnect & reconnect the ethernet connection for it renegotiate.

If worst comes to worst, there is also the option to manually set the speed. That should probably be a last resort, as it is easy to mess up the settings. You might want to have a read of this before making any changes:

… and I was just about to mention this as the possible cause once again … :ok_hand:

Ohh haha, now the question is, which person did change the cable :open_mouth:

… if dogs can eat the homework, perhaps they can change cables, too? :upside_down_face:

Hahaha, maybe :open_mouth:
