Error message during updates - Failed to Show Notification

Hello Mates,

I can’t precise when, but at certain moment I start to face and error massage during system updates, and due to time out it consumes a lot of time. Initially it didn’t bother me much but now it’s. Tried some command lines here and there but nothing worked.

Anyone has any idea?

Note: everything is working fine on my desktop, during the update the same, before the error is ok and after too. I think the error and relate time out is the only one issue.

That happens when you are using TTY, or normal session without plasmashell running.

It’s just saying that it tried to show a notification “New Timeshift snapshot successfully created”, but the notification service was not found, so continuing anyways…

Seems like there’s some more process happening in backend after the notification step, and it looks stuck a small period.

Ps: you can try next update in actual plasma session GUI session, using pamac cli or pacman, both will show a notification without that error.

make sense what you said.

In the past, the recommendation was always to update the system through TTY, and I was doing it by the GUI inside plasma until I faced plasma freeze and f**ed my install. So I created the habit to update from TTY witch looks like safer.

Maybe this notification was introduced from timeshift in any new versions. Will follow you proposal next time and try to update the system inside plasma to see what happen.

Note: Disabling Timeshift notification is not a good idea, so I hope updating from GUI isn’t a problem anymore considering Steam deck based on arch, etc.

Well, there should be clear distinction between “updating in GUI session” and “updating via pamac GUI”

Pamac GUI, the software you see as ‘Add Remove Software’ is the one that occassionally has issues like freezing, sometimes it just disappears like your past experience.

I would still say if know doing updates via TTY, and if you’re comfortable with using pamac cli, it’s basically the same.
You just use normal terminal like konsole to do updates, as long as your system has enough memory ~8GB, you shouldn’t see any crashes.

The TTY only update advice probably comes from users with <4GB Ram, which often crash the whole system as the DE is using half the memory in idle.

Even when you do updates via GUI terminal but pamac CLI, you’ll see notification working fine…

pamac cli inside plasma, if plasma freezes or find critical error the terminal konsole will be killed too I guess.

Honestly speaking, I prefer doing it inside plasma because it requires less step to do it. Don’t need to log out and press ctrl + F2 and log again through TTY :smiley:

Will do through pamac cli as you suggest and not through the pamac GUI.

There are several reasons you may wish to update using TTY and not the regular GUI process.

  • The most common is when you update kernels, graphics drivers, or other apps that could hinder your current GUI session.
  • It can also be handy when an update requires user intervention before reboot.

This method creates a clean, easy update environment that allows for a full view of what is happening.
