and echo shows:

xxx@xxx ~> echo $XDG_DATA_DIRS
/home/xxx/.local/share/flatpak/exports/share /var/lib/flatpak/exports/share /usr/local/share /usr/share

Here
echo $XDG_DATA_DIRS
returns
/home/xxx/.local/share/flatpak/exports/share:/var/lib/flatpak/exports/share:/usr/local/share:/usr/share

You can try replacing the spaces by : in case it matters.

The latter format is the correct format.
